Can we know why those who say to respect the rules here do not ?

Spoke with you that day, Jean-Noel...apologized and understand the gravity of the situation now. Hope to see you this summer :)

Good job guys, hopefully some of last year's mistakes can be avoided... Will go have a look end of September, hope to see you there (before I turn around and head back down :p )

Re: [BASEMenace2] Le Brevent 2014
People who re able to jump there should already know all that stuff, no need a video for that.

Re: [alygator] Le Brevent 2014
Agreed.

I think it's actually counter productive and will just loure more people into jumping it, who are not ready or experienced enought. Especially if you call it Mystic Brevent :-). The only Mystic thing about it is why Matt was jumping it outside of predetermined timeframe, when rules were already established.

Ehh, marketing....

Maybe its just me but I think I spoted some subtile and discrete product placement in this educational video of Brevent...

You mean, you spotted some educational purpose in this video advertisement ?
As you said, I probably have to watch it twice to find it Wink

Haha I love brand wars.
I thought the video was a nice reminder that the jump is very serious. What is worse, one manufacturer jumping it outside the time frame, or another having multiple tree landings from taking a line too low? Everyone just stay safe.

Jno,

I like you and all but if we start pointing fingers here, I would really ask if anyone from any manufacturer ever actually played by the rules in Stechelberg? So no crossing the river in freefall, no jumping from HU during the day and so on. :) And that goes to all manufacturers be it you guys, Robi“s shop, Squirell, TS and all others. :) Making rules in basejumping is a bit like playing lottery with an empty coupon. You feel like you are doing a lot to get rich but eventually you know all your efforts are in vain. Unfortunately.

Apart from that comment, I watched 4 minutes and a bit of this 10 minute commercial and found it so boring that I closed it. Maybe it got better in the second half. :D

Re: Le Brevent 2014
this stuff is totally the biggest turn off to the sport. and by this stuff, i mean you basegod wingsuiters and your ridiculous petty bickering. get over yourselves. if you can't move forward and make progress, you're part of the problem, not part of the solution. you're all awesome people (and i'm assuming that about the ones i haven't actually met yet) but this stuff brings you down a notch.

have fun, respect each other. Smile

Re: [hjumper33] Le Brevent 2014
hjumper 33 advice here..
When you have nothing smart to say batter be quiet
Your argument is loose and actually stupid.

You have heard something about me landed in the trees 2 years ago and you just get the ''light of wisdom'' in your head and you used that here as argument.
First , check what append ( you may ask me or anyone who was there ) and than think before writing first.

Regardless of how it looks to you , I did not brake any rules there and that nasty line twist i had with ''terrific'' crash i would not wish to anyone.
Maybe is the time to learn how to respond to some questions too as Scotty Bob gave you here great example, posting his replay (which I respect more than anything here )

Anyway the movie is nice as the guys really leave impression of looking ''worried'' about the whole situation.
Video has some nice parts and for sure the tourist office of Chamonix may considering of using it for overall promotion of the area.
Must say that I am pissed as there was no enough of Awesome , Epic and Rad words in the ''educational'' material as those words are still so popular in 2014. .
cheers

Re: [robibird] Le Brevent 2014
Sorry Robi, I actually wasnt planning on naming you at all, just pointing out to JN, similar to what Markus did, that theres no sense calling the kettle black. We all make mistakes, and we all at times have done things dangerous/ethically questionable which is bound to happen if you BASE jump. I have nothing but the utmost respect for all the manufacturers in this industry and what they have done to improve the sport in both performance and safety, even though it seems that very few of them seem to get along.

Didnt mean to offend with my sarcasm, and the only point I wanted anyone to take home from my post is the last part, which I will elaborate. Whatever you fly, where ever you fly it, and whoever you fly with, and regardless of what you think of the Brevent video...be careful, make good decisions, and stay safe. That includes you Robi, JN, Matt, Scotty Bob, and all the squirrels, phoenixes, tonys?, and others out there. Wink

Re: [maretus] Le Brevent 2014
Markus,
i personnaly do not play with rules, as it's very stupid to break it when it's here to keep the place open.
when exit are totally illegal, it's another story, and jumping from it usually do not create more problems.
but jumping Brevent when about +50 paragliders are here, middle of the day, is making more difficult for French Association to keep this place open.
when we commented, some are so aggressive that you feel that it is our fault, and we should not blame (not all, some came to speak and are friendly)
if tomorrow the magnificient valley of Yosemite is open to some time, and we come, jump anytime and break the rules, what locals will says ? fuck yeah ?

it is so easy to be respectful !
Peace !

If Yosemite was opened to BASE tomorrow, I would not expect it to stay open longer than a year (or less). BASE jumpers are just not adult enough, as a group, to handle that responsibility.

Re: [TomAiello] Le Brevent 2014
As a group that is always in need of funding, I'm surprised NPS doesn't open it up for permitted jumps. I'd pay $100 for a day pass to jump in Yosemite. They could sell 5-10 per day. Might only get 2 jumps in but it's better than flying all the way to Italy to still pay 26 Euro a day for two jumps.

They could take part of the proceeds to buy rescue insurance and keep the margin for the park's general fund.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this. Has it been revisited since the government started shutting down every 6 months?

I had multiple meetings with NPS officials several years ago about this sort of idea.

One of the major issues was their desire to have the permit holder (which would be a guiding permit, along the same lines as rafting guides operating in the park system) help quell illegal (unpermitted) jumps.

Re: [TomAiello] Le Brevent 2014
So they'd want to give us tasers and ask us to take out any non-permitted jumpers or what? I can see how that's kind of a deal-breaker on our end.

I wonder if they'd be more open to it nowadays. The sport is growing and becoming more well-known. Seems like a reasonable step to take what is currently a liability (spending dollars chasing jumpers) and turning it into a revenue stream.

But it's the government after all, so I'm not holding my breath.

What they want is someone they can hold responsible.

The system would be designed so that "guides" would receive "guiding permits" and the permits would be revoked (or simply not renewed) if there were issues with other jumpers (who were not permitted guides).

Re: [TomAiello] Le Brevent 2014
Yeah...that pretty much guarantees that we'd last a few months before all the permits were revoked.

Re: [bluhdow] Le Brevent 2014
From my experience in meeting with superintendents it is not the main concern of responsibility. The main concern now is setting a precedent . The only argument they have that even remotely holds water is impedance on terrain classified as wilderness. Other than that there are lots of pertinent places for Base in our national parks. The idea is now to create a collaboration or regional group of parks so no one superintendent is held accountable or god forbid scrutinized.

Ps it's special use permits that will get approved, not commercial. We, as jumpers, don't want commercial permits. In my opinion it will destroy the comraderie of BASE and what makes some other worldly locations more fun.

Anyway stuff is in the works. Please resume the shit slinging that was in this thread before :).
