Re: [seekfun] Helicopters are an expensive way to rescue drunks
Perhaps he staged some brews at the bottom and simply fell asleep in a drunken bliss of not killing himself during the day. I've seem more than one jump with beer in hand or a 22 stuffed in the BOC. Sending a heli seems a bit excessive considering they had absolutely no idea where the guy might be or what it would be up to. What if he had simply jumped down a chain saw (saw it happen.. still running at full blast!) and was trimming up the LZ.... uhh.. with a headlamp... drunk. :P

I actually jump a chainsaw on almost every jump. It's a regular part of my emergency kit.

Welcome to the circus that is Twin Falls. Smile

I'm not sure why the guy he was jumping with didn't just go down to find him instead of calling 911.

Tom will remember giving me the phone call many years ago when he found the body of Richard dead in the snow after getting drunk and "lost" in the canyon. I expect the authorities remember that too hence the chopper but I do think that was a way over the top response and the jumper with him should have checked on him...

Or you know...maybe walked/climbed out together? Everyone is responsible for themselves and yada yada yada...but if i was concerned for the well being of a fellow jumper I certainly wouldnt leave them unless there was no other option. Maybe I am strange like that.

It's only excessive after he's found ok. If he had injured himself it would be viewed as ideal after the fact. I've been called out in the helicopter for this type of situation more times than I can count.

Maybe the other jumper was just slightly more drunk, and couldn't actually get over the rail... Ended up passing out at the top... (I can imagine him with rig on, in fetal position, snuggled up in his pilot chute... Goodnight Irene...) ;-) ;-)

I cant believe i read that article! I was literally in the same situation back in 2011. After pounding a bottle with some friends at the hotel (yaaaaaaaarggghh!!!), we did a jump at 1am. Jump went fine, but i was so fucked up i literally kept almost falling off the trail into the river. At one point i almost gave up and passed out on the trail but we all made it back. And for the record i no longer mix booze and BASE. Its too fucking sloppy
