Bridge Day 2013 video?
Anything happening with the past year's official Bridge Day video or the guy who is doing it?

Haven't seen my copy or gotten a response from Avenphoto.com.

I remember from years ago that the videos were often late, what with it being a massive editing job...

Jason Bell, on the other hand, is quick to reply to email.

He says it all has been a bit of a disappointment, as the video is indeed very late. Communication has not been good, but avenphoto claims to be at the DVD duplicating stage.

Wait and see...

All,

I've just given Bryan a few days to respond to me with answers before I take things public in this forum. I tried to resolve this via email/telephone, but communication has been slow and the DVD is very late. Jumpers should be able to check back at this thread shortly for answers. Thanks.

Re: [base428] Bridge Day 2013 video?
All,

I'm being told the DVD is at the duplicators, but that's been the story for awhile now. I have tried to remain calm over the past few months and it's now April. I get a handful of emails and/or phone calls every week from curious jumpers who wonder if they'll ever see their video. So, I now feel it's important for me to address everyone with some details.

Bryan and I have a contract for the Bridge Day video. I have never asked for a dime from any Bridge Day videographer, but I do request a copy of the raw footage in exchange for promoting the video, providing access (boom crane), and other offerings. To be honest, the video is a pain in the butt every year. To add to the chaos, the Bridge Day Commission occasionally chimes in about licensing and other trademark issues from time to time. So, don't be surprised if Bryan has killed all future Bridge Day DVDs.

Bryan has been slow to respond to emails and phone calls for months. It's the same old story, week after week, that the DVD is almost done and/or it's being duplicated. Same shit, different day. Ironically, Bryan was late in editing the Bridge Day 2011 video, but I gave him a 2nd chance this past year. He told me he wouldn't make the same mistake again.

Bryan doesn't appear to care that the video is late and it's taken a lot of my energy to simply get answers from him. He told me that its my "job" to deal with the growing group of angry jumpers who purchased the Bridge Day 2013 DVD. Our contract includes monetary penalties for being late, but they apparently mean nothing to him. I'm confused, frustrated, and disappointed.

My apologies to the Bridge Day 2013 jumpers who ordered this video. I take some responsibility for hiring Bryan and I'll continue pushing him to finish it. I'll keep everyone updated within this thread as new information is available.

There's your problem right there. In my experience you get what you pay for. There's no money to be made doing that video. If you demand a timely delivery and excellent service than you should pay someone to do it. Maybe instead of not asking for a dime you could offer a dime (or more) in exchange for the video service and the raw footage. I'm sure that Bryan delivers jobs to his paying clients on time. Its your job to put on an excellent event. Your job to make sure that all of your contractors do their job. Your job to field complaints when your contractors don't come through. It seems like you have trouble every year with the video. Maybe it's time to change your approach or axe the video option all together. I make my living shooting outdoor events like bridge day. Most jobs I make $1000/day plus expenses, keep all rights to my footage, and am provided with the tools needed to shoot (ie-crane basket etc) Some of these jobs are smaller events than bridge day. I'm not sticking up for Bryan nor saying you have to offer $1000 for the day. It's just really difficult for me to read your above comment followed by your complaining and not speak up as a professional videographer/photographer. Why did you give Bryan a second chance after 2012? Id venture to guess that you didn't have any other options and he was the only one willing to take your offer of no pay, high demands, and lack of appreciation for the value of professional video production.

And for those that have already payed for the video. That sucks that you haven't gotten it yet.

Re: [cloudtramp] Bridge Day 2013 video?
FYI: Gotta love your crazy deflection of the actual problem. I'm having a difficult time understanding YOUR angle. Are you saying that it's OK for Bryan to be late in delivering the DVD because I didn't pay him? Bryan chose to do the video, he knew the work involved, and he signed a contract that spelled out his obligations.

I have plenty of people willing to shoot the video each year. The video crew makes money by selling the DVD, so there is no need for me to pay them (ie. supply/demand). In the old days, the video team actually paid the BD Organizer. Bryan WAS paid to make the DVD by all the jumpers who pre-ordered the video nearly six months ago.
Shortcut
Re: [cloudtramp] Bridge Day 2013 video?
hmm, I see what you're saying but there are 2 sides to this. Brian also knew what he was signing up for. It's not like he did it for charity, did he?

My understanding was that Bridge Day does not make any money from sales of the DVD's, only the production company does. So it's a trade off - you can shoot video, and get paid for what you sell in DVDs. Both sides knew what they were signing. I can't really side with Brian (and I don't know both parties really, only jumped BD 2 years and did not get/want the video). He took jumper's money and has not delivered a product! I'd ask for a refund.

4) Free catapult launch for Bryan
5) Free T-shirts, pizza, and beer for video team

I've heard some complaints from jumpers at my local DZ about not getting their video yet. I order the video in 2011 as well as the raw footage. I only received the raw footage from one of my two jumps. I had to keep pestering Bryan for the video from my second jump. His eventual response was that if he didn't give me the footage it means he didn't have any footage of my second jump, which is a hot lie because it was on the edited DVD!! Live and learn, glad I didn't buy the 2013 video. :(

Not at all. I'm not defending Bryan nor do I have any comments to make about how he runs his business, thats his business. I know what you provide the video concession I was in the basket in 2011. (And never got pizza or tshirts PirateUnsureWink) All I'm saying is that there is little to no financial incentive for a video crew to shoot your event on spec. There are a lot of costs involved with shooting an event like this and its impossible to do alone (which means you have to hire (and pay) people to help.)
With the proliferation of POV cameras nowadays how many people actually buy a video? Everyone and their mother seems to be a "videographer/editor" now. I have seen you make similar posts three years in a row. All I'm saying is that maybe its time to change the way you do things. Have you thought of having sponsors cover the costs of video production, increase registration fees by a dollar or two to help, and then provide every jumper who attends with a DVD? Or some variation of that? Or else cancel the video all together. Or you could give Green Machine the job, He seems to have his plan dialed.

You get what you pay for. Every time.

Re: [cloudtramp] Bridge Day 2013 video?
The video crew IS getting paid by selling DVDs. And you worked for Bryan Rapoza at BD2011 shooting video in the basket that I provided, so your criticism makes complete sense now.

PS. I'm not surprised that you missed the free Tshirt and pizza. Bryan's video crew missed many things - especially deadlines.
Shortcut
Re: [base428] Bridge Day 2013 video?
What DVD's? LOL! Sounds like you've got a well oiled machine that's working perfectly then. No need to make any changes.

Just out of curiosity; How many discs are sold every year? My experience in event sales is they generally add up to about 10% of participants. Lets say 20% of 400 jumpers buying DVD's at $30 per disc equals $2400. Minus expenses: Minimum crew (crane/landing/air-air) is three. Then there's travel costs, material costs, taxes/fees, camera gear, customer service time, website, merchant account, and weeks (or more) of non-stop full time editing (unless you hire an editing crew). Where's the financial incentive? I'm not seeing it.

I was hired for the day as a camera operator by Bryan and was paid cash for my services. My deadline was the end of the shooting day and that's when I delivered Bryan my footage. Beyond that it was not my job to edit or deliver anything so the weak personal jab is unfounded. Funny how defensive people get when you offer suggestions to try and help their situation.

In reply to:

How so? My suggestions (not criticisms btw so you can untwist your panties now) have nothing to do with the fact that Bryan hired me once to shoot a job that he knew I was qualified for. In fact, I had a great time at Bridge Day that year.

uhmmm, maybe he should have thought of that before asking to shoot the event?

After the event, he needs to respect his part of the deal. Technically, nobody should give a shit about how much money he put into it. It was his call, there was no gun held to his head to shoot the video.

Looks like he already had experience of doing this event in the past, so it's not like everything is a big surprise anyway.

What do they say... you fool me once shame on you, you fool me twice... (you can't get fooled again? Tongue)

Re: [cloudtramp] Bridge Day 2013 video?
If you want to offer suggestions, then email me. Your suggestions rubbed me wrong, in that you were basically telling me that Bryan's lack of communication and late DVD delivery was somehow my fault. The only mistake I made was hiring Bryan Rapoza. I get it that you do video work as a job and yes, you're probably paid well for that elsewhere. Bridge Day isn't a normal gig, so comparing it to other events may not be the best choice. Plenty of jumpers are willing to do the job with compensation coming from DVD sales. That's the way it has been for decades and Bryan knew this when he signed the contract.

It's funny how you took the focus away from the fact that it's April and the Bridge Day 2013 DVD is nowhere to be found. Jumpers are pissed.....and I'm tired of answering phone calls and emails about the issue. That is why I have a contract with Bryan, and I'm going to enforce every last sentence in that contract. So Bryan should start delivering DVDs sooner than later.

Notice that Bryan has yet to comment on this thread.....hmmm.

I've had several video crews shoot Bridge Day over the last 11 years. Some were awesome, like Ben Yonker, but only one of them caused me headaches (Bryan Rapoza). Unfortunately, Bryan's tardiness will likely be the death of the Bridge Day BASE jumping DVD.

Like I said: My comments have nothing to do with Bryan's business, ethics, or punctuality. That's not any of my business and as I arguably own a "competing" business to Bryan I ethically have no comment about his business operations. . My suggestions are just general suggestions based on my event photography/videography experience in order for Jason to avoid these sorts of problems in the future. Ummm. Ok.

All I meant by that is that as the event organizer (not a job I would want in a million years) it all comes back to you. Regardless of your deal with concessionaires and contractors. When they don't deliver you look bad. If it's an ongoing problem than its your job to figure out how to fix it.

Six months is indeed an exorbitantly long time. I understand your frustration as well as all those who ordered DVDs. Contracts are wonderful things for this very reason and you (as well as Bryan) should uphold your ends of the deal.

Not that I want to get in the middle of this (I didn't order a video) but I would like to point out that Jason, as well as everyone who ordered a video, has a contract with Bryan. Each person can enforce their own contract.

Jason's contract may have different wording and penalties but essentially they are no different. 'A' promises to deliver widget to 'B'. 'A' does not deliver so 'B' has recourse against 'A'.

Jason, I'm curious if your contract has any clauses that help to make the 'video purchasers' whole again, if a situation arises where the video is not delivered.

Man oh man. This must be the "unflattering letter on basejumper.com" I was threatend with recently. And I'm not going to lie, Bridge Day has always been special to me, so it hurts a little bit to be dragged through the mud.
And I refuse to believe that "Bryan's tardiness will likely be the death of the Bridge Day BASE jumping DVD." Jason's the decision maker for now, so that rests solely on him.

The way I look at it I have two options. I could play into Jason's little angry-man game here, and air out all our dirty laundry,
(hint:CloudTramp's not too far off the mark)
or
I can take the high road.
I know I won't ever work for/with JB again, for reasons that involve noone but he and I.
So I'll do this:
If you ordered a video from me at BridgeDay 2013, and you think it's taken too long, and would like a FULL REFUND, then contact me personally, and I'll take your name off the list, send you your money and that's that.

Once the DVD ships, this offer will be rescinded.

Have a nice day. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

There is no dirty laundry, Bryan. This forum thread originated from a jumper who was complaining about your lack of communication and late DVD. As the Bridge Day BASE Jumping Coordinator, I feel an obligation to step in and communicate the DVD status since you've failed to do so.

When Bridge Day jumpers continue to call/email me asking why you won't respond to them and the DVD is very late, then you're damn right I'm going to get angry. You were late in delivering the Bridge Day 2011 DVD, but I gave you a second chance (at your request) for Bridge Day 2013. You burned everyone again. Apparently some good did come out of my anger - you're offering refunds now. Honor your contracts and commitments and life will be easier for you in the future.

I have a few ideas left, but they're messy.

Not sure if you all know, but I made Bryan sign a contract with me. The contract spelled out specific dates to provide the DVD to his customers along with financial penalties. Of course, Bryan basically laughed at me a few months ago and said "you'll never sue me over this" and "your contract is worthless since I live in a different state". I've never sued anyone or been sued, and I definitely wouldn't want to sue another BASE jumper, but the fact that he has been so rude and defiant may change my mind. Many people gave him money and he's reportedly not answering refund requests.

The 2nd idea will take some time to figure out and I'll have more information available as we get closer to Bridge Day 2014.

For now, I suggest you call Bryan Rapoza at 904-449-8081 or stop by his house at 630 Kingsley Ave in Orange Park, Florida. Let me know if you all have other ideas.

Additionally, you've failed to issue the REFUNDS that were promised months ago. Answer your phone, answer your emails, and man up and deliver the product you contractually promised to deliver. You keep saying the DVD is done, but no no one has seen a copy yet.

Re: [base428] Bridge Day 2013 video?
Okay. So obviously I haven't been on Basejumper in a while. Someone I respect greatly informed me of this deragatory mess on here, and I have to say it's a little over the top.
Thereatening me with physical attack? Posting my home address in a public forum? Come on guys.

That being said, I'm currently uploading the entire timeline to youtube. This way everyone can see thier jumps asap. Also, Jason mentioned having his staff shoot the event and give away the video for free. Ironincally, that was my idea originallyin 2011, and 2013. I know from experience there's plenty of sponsor money that could cover sucha a venture. I'm sure Subaru or Red Bull would be interested in footing the expense, in exchange for thier brand all over the video.
As far as the lack of updates, I'd rather let just finish the project and get it out the door, than send another, "almost" email to everyone.
To those who have been really nasty either here anonymously or via PM, let me take a moment to remind you that, 1, I'm a one man operation, working with a budget that doesnt cover all expenses. 2- I'm not turning a profit, I'm working at a loss. And I'm okay with that. Right up until the mud slinging started.
It's hard to get behind a project that people don't appreciate.
That being said, I'm not going to let a few bad apples ruin it for everyone else, the many many jumpers who emailed me personally with words of encouragement, thanks, and appreciation. This project is a colossal undertaking, about a thousand jumps from three or four camera locations comes out to about 3500 indiviaul clips and cuts, and a timeline longer than two feature films. That takes a while.
As far as those requesting refunds, I've been low on capital, hence the delay. However, work has picked back up on my end, and I'm shooting a huge gig for a major broadcast nextwork this week, that should inject more than enough cash flow to refund the three people whov'e requested a refund.

Fwiw, this forum was never the official information source regarding this project. Jason has posted my personal phone number as well as my home address in this very public forum.
(thanks for that) yet has not called me on the phone a single time in over 5 months. I have however, begun to recieve some fairly nasty emails threatening all kinds of nonsense that I won't repeat here, but know that harassing me, threatening me with lawsuits, calling for my physical assault and constantly posting slander on bj.com doesnt really speed up your project. In fact, it slows it down completely. To a grinding halt at times.

Be nice folks, I'm doing you a service worth three times what you paid, and happily. It takes time.

Also, if you didn't order or even attend this event, you don;t really have a dog in the fight, so knock it off with the name calling and such. ( I'm looking at you Robin Heid)

Lastly, the gentleman calling for "hundreds of paypal complaints" there weren't a hundred units sold, so good luck with that.

As I mentioned previously, if you want a refund, contact me directly, or post your name on this thread.
Once these clips are uploaded and released, that offer is off the table.

And if you really want to blast me, at least have the decency to do it with your real name. Anonymous bitching doesn't really hit my radar.

Peace, Love, Unity and Respect.

Re: [avenfoto] Bridge Day 2013 video?
What a load of BS. No one threatened you. Poor little Bryan is working all by himself and has apparently spent everyone's money before the product is finished. Let's all have a pity party for Bryan.

The only reason I offered to possibly shoot Bridge Day 2014 and give the footage away for free is because I feel GUILTY for hiring you. Bridge Day jumpers are pissed and you've essentially stolen their money. I am STILL receiving phone calls and emails asking about the status of the video (many of them think my company is doing the video, which hurts me).

No one can get in touch with you to ask for a refund. Now you want them to post their names on this forum? What a joke. I have countless emails from jumpers mentioning that you won't answer emails or phone calls.

We've talked several times over the phone during the last 5 months and I recently left a voicemail for you. How about the 10-20 emails that I sent you (most were unanswered). When you rip off the BASE community, don't be surprised when someone posts your address and/or phone number.

BASE is a self-policing sport, so why are you surprised that everyone is coming down hard on you? In the old days, someone would have already tarred and feathered you, then took your damn computer and finished the DVD by now.

EDIT: Since you got all worked up over your home address and phone number being posted here, would it be less intrusive if I just linked over to your web page where the same info is there in FULL PUBLIC DISPLAY?

Look at yourself, son. You are the one who took people's money, promised them a product that is months late, spent all the money you were paid to produce the product and then refused to communicate with anyone until you landed the "big network job (ooh, soooo sexy and coool -- can I have your AUTOGRAPH?!?!) so you could finish the job you've already been paid for, then condescendingly whine, snivel and bitch at anyone who objects or points out your malfeasance.

"Just sit back and enjoy my total awesomeness," you say... which is, in fact, one of the original definitions of a rapist, to wit:

rape
rape [reyp]
1. the unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse.
2. any act of sexual intercourse that is forced upon a person.
3. statutory rape.
4. an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation: the rape of the countryside.

So I did not in fact call you any names, "Mister" Rape-oza. I just stated a fact.

Please do yourself a favor and quit with the whining and sniveling. It's bad enough that you're ripping people off and blaming them for not properly appreciating your awesomeness, but to then go and whine and snivel and puke baby formula all over yourself and them kinda ruins the awesome effect, you know?

Hey fuck-O

I'm not sure how you keep convincing yourself that you are anything more than a dead-beat fucking thief.

Whine and make excuses all you want, but that is never going to change the fact that you are unable to live up to your end of a deal. I'm really surprised someone hasn't kicked your ass yet, and not just for ripping off a huge number of fellow base jumpers, but for being such a back-peddling douche bag about it.

You have the goddamn footage. Men paid for that footage. Get it to them before Bridge Day 2014 if you have any survival instincts at all

Wanna kick my ass over thirty bucks? Good luck.

And Robin Heid, I think theres a bridge near you you should go flick with a Triathalon 170. Worked pretty good last time eh?

It was a Triathlon 135. Same one I did a massively cool swoop on in the same place the year before -- right before Dwain's leg landed at my feet.

Woulda turned out fine the second time too if I'd not jumped a field-packed rig (ooooops) but none of that has anything to do with the fact that you are a pathetically whiny little biatch thief trying miserably to deflect attention away from your incompetence and malfeasance. Funniest of all is that you know who I am but I have not the slightest idea who you are or what you've done other than steal from people and then blame them for it. Try again, son, but try also to remember the old maxim that the first way to get out of a hole is to STOP DIGGING.

p.s. here are the results of my ooooops... no ill effects, though; jumping is no problem and, amazingly enough, I don't even set off the metal detectors.

It stayed in the wingsuit all the way down. A 1-inch stabilization cable cut through his right leg at the hip and the whole leg and part of the suit fell free from the rest of him.

But enough on Dwain, who IIRC never promised anyone anything that he didn't deliver... I just found this story about someone who is apparently one of Avenfoto's relatives and probably one of his business partners... both dudes use exactly the same excuses when the people they ripped off object.

LOL... trying to change the subject does not change the fact that you have stolen thousands of dollars form people for a product you promised to deliver months ago, and instead of owning up to it you attack those who mention your (at best)incompetence and (most likely) malfeasance and dishonesty. I think it's becoming quite clear that the video is never coming out. I think he hinted to this himself by essentially saying: it's only $30 bucks you all paid, do you know how much work it is - suck it up, it cost me way much more to shoot and edit it, etc...

I exchanged emails with Bryan last week. He reports that he's having issues trying to include everything on a single DVD, rather than two DVDs. I urged him to simply turn the raw footage over to me and I'll finish it myself. Still waiting on his reply to that. I'll continue to push for turning everything over to someone who can finish it. There are many jumpers who want to see their first BASE jump on video and they can't do so until this is resolved.

Seems like the best plan - just upload all the raw footage and let someone else do it and make it available through some file sharing website, etc. if anyone wants raw footage without the editing. Or sharing website for a final edited product.

Bryan Rapoza's Bridge Day 2013 partially-edited videos are here:

http://parabase.dlis.net/BD13/

Some time slots and audio are missing. Attempts to reach Bryan to resolve these issues have failed. Since I contractually have rights to the video, I'm making these available to anyone who got suckered into paying Bryan for a DVD. Also, we made the Bridge Day 2014 video available for free to all Bridge Day jumpers (see other thread for details).
