More BASE News from the new 1 World Trade Center

The story behind this story will be interesting... maybe they already have a book deal to defray the costs of their prosecution and fines... or something came to light while the powers-that-be investigated the kid who burned the site earlier this month.

Otherwise it's kinda hard to imagine why they 'fessed up now when it seems that they apparently made a clean getaway initially...

That is how the justice system operates in NYC today. If enough people complain vocally about the Soviet-like tactics of the NYPD, they drop or reduce the charges.

Agree.

If anything, I think it being made public and getting media attention should help their case. It makes NYPD look like they are being excessive (to say the least) in their charges.

I think most people will see the stunt as ultimately harmless, disagree with the harsh treatment (especially in contrast to the 16 year old), and should help ease the pressure on these guys.

Either way, that's one hell of a B!

It is quite possible that the police released the video. This has happened before due to laws regarding evidence.
When I jumped the WTC (in New Orleans) I had no video or GC. It was before that Era (error) ;-P

"The skydivers say that if the video becomes popular on YouTube and pulls in some money, they will donate the proceeds to a charity for families of 9/11 victims, Rossig’s attorney, Timothy Parlatore, told The News.

“This was never intended to be a publicity stunt,” Parlatore added. “However, since the police department has turned it into something of a spectacle, the defendants are hoping the video can be used for some good.”

Agreed. This is the NYPD throwing a tantrum because they didn't do their job. They should have put their resources into tightening up security instead of going after few guys who did no harm. While they were wasting tax payer dollars going after these guys a 16 yo was able to slip through a hole in a fence & again make it all the way up to the top of the building.

can you see this on the video??

Yes.
You can hear him pass by and the jumper turns their head to the rightat around 3:09. If you pause it at that time look directly in the center bottom of the frame, just to the right of the jumper foot and you will see the canopy opening.

On that jumpers video(cam2) I looked for the canopy while he was in freefall and I could not see it.

To be fair, "Freedom Tower" is only a colloquialism. The actual name is One World Trade Center.

A BASE logbook would generally be considered hearsay and thus inadmissible as evidence, but I suppose it would depend on what purposes it is being offered for.

I don't practice in NY state, but I get the distinct feeling that this judge is a raging shithead.

True, but another thought I had was that if they have gone through his logbook then they have possible information on his other jumps(made up or not) and can use that to justify investigations into those, could they not?
A good reason to not have too much info in your logbook(comic book).

Using logbooks against us and fingerprinting.... what's next?

Arguably, the logbook entries could be used as evidence of "prior bad acts" because they tend to show the defendants' willingness to put their self-interest above those of society's.....but this rule of evidence only applies if the defendants testify. I believe this would also get the statements out of hearsay because proving the truth of the matters asserted would no longer be the purpose.
