Blindfolded BASE pack job contest
Please do not judge this post by it's subject line.

I was just packing my parachute in a Swiss hotel room hallway that had one of those lights on a timer. Every few minutes the dang thing kept turning off and I would have to pause and turn it back on.

After a while, and during times when stopping was less than convenient I found myself continuing in complete darkness, at least to complete the step.

I got to thinking...

could you pack your rig in the dark? blindfolded?

I BET WE COULD!

and... why not make a competition out of it?

For real... we could do it safely. With supervisors that are not blindfolded watching and being very entertained and that could step in and say "hey buddy, that blindfolded pack job just is not safe to jump" And then we could jump our blindfolded pack jobs in places where nothing could possibly go wrong, like twin falls idaho or out of a balloon above lake tahoe, or tracking out over the Fujord in Norway.

We could vote in different categories similar to high school yearbooks!

-Blindfolded pack job most likely to succeed
-Best looking blindfolded pack job
-Funniest Blindfolded pack job (to watch being packed)
-Best opening Blindfolded pack job
-Who took there blindfolded pack job the lowest?

Who is in??

This will be a real hoot!

Sounds like a phenomenal idea, especially the lake balloon idea... Low pull contest... Over water? Lets do it! No way that could go wrong. Ill play.

I volunteer to watch a few packs jobs... Yeah buddy, that ones good to go... Wink

Of course, the last time I packed in the dark (not the pack-jobs fault but certainly the packers fuck-up) I managed to land in a tree and get hauled off to jail.

Ive packed in the dark a few times the hardest part is putting the pin through the loop. My loops are pretty small

Love it! I'm in!

How about a team event too and make it a bit more interesting...

2 jumpers per team, each one supervises the others blindfolded pack job. Then they switch rigs for the jump, which they do blindfolded, while getting talked down to the LZ via radio by their partner.

I guess quite a few pack jobs will open fine. Just look at how people pack skydive parachutes and the small amount of reserve rides ;-)

WFIW, back in the good old days at our DZ, we had a competition packing your (main skydiving) gear in the john. Crazy And yes, you had to jump it.

Already done. Jumped on a low E. Packed in complete darkness of a closed hangar one night where I literally could not see anything. Completely by feel.

Perfect heading performance.

I'd do it with a blindfold.

I already have experience in the P.I.T.D. method (packing in the dark) - it works fine! My friend didn't even notice the difference Wink

Haha. That's the BASE equivalent of running out of good injection sites in your arm and making due with something in your ankle.

I'm in if we can arrange the time to be in the same place. I'll go pack mine up blindfolded just for the heck of it. Maybe even tonight.
