Re: [bluhdow] Phoenix-Fly News: R&D 2014
There is a big difference between perceived and actual performance. Pressurization is of no real influence on the actual performance, aside from providing rigidity for the actual airfoil that generates surface/lift.
Once a solid airfoil is achieved by pressurization, anything beyond that ('harder') mostly influences fatigue/muscle strength needed. And as an averse effect, makes the suit a bit less easy to maneuver/move in turns. So there the easier move-able wings on the big suits has always been a deliberate choice.
Thickness of the actual wing profile is of much more affect to 'rigidity' than the pressure inside. Compare a thin 10cm thick inflatable matras/bed to a 40cm thick one, and you will see the thicker one being a lot more solid/less bend, at the same pressure/inflation.
But on the newer suits (Vampire Race and Venom Power) the larger surface area have had a changes in inlet design, and though harder cell-pressure is part of it, these changes are mostly related to create an even better symmetrical inflation, and creating a suit that inflates at the lowest airspeed possible.
Its one of the most agile big suits Ive jumped so far, and the skydives and basejumps Ive done on it (Venom Power) already convinced me its my suit for the 2014 season
