Bike BASE Jump

Not sure I've seen a cliff strike from the cliff you exited in absence of some kind of off heading. Coworker sent this to me.

Re: [base698] Bike BASE Jump
yeah I saw that I wonder if he even got linestreatch before impact and the injuries.

Re: [wasatchrider] Bike BASE Jump
OoohWwww. .. Looked just a little short & painful for my taste in watching entertaining BASE Vid. .

Wonder who packed his ass out of there ???

Re: [base698] Bike BASE Jump
More speed!

At least he was prepared for the crash.

Re: [base698] Bike BASE Jump
Nothing strange in this video, APPART the fact that it is not on EPIC TV with one of those crazy title...

Pad Up, Pound In
For those who did not watch it:
100 meters or 328 feet
slightly positive cliff
Stowed from a bicycle

Yes, he opens right before impacting
the cliff and then sliding down the
hill along with the bike in his canopy.

Jumper was hauled up from the bottom
using a team of rescue guys and rope.
There was an ambulance & crew waiting.

My 2 cents, if he had more speed when
hit the ramp that would have helped,
but the gravel on the road made his
approach less than ideal, hence slower.

PS: part of the reason I do not go
stowed from very low altitudes Wink

Take care,

where is the measurement with 100m coming from? from exit to his first contact with cliff its about 100 frames (at 29.9fps), therefore around 3.3 seconds, that would be about 55 meters i think...

i dont know where they were aiming the laser ranger to get to full 100m.

and it looks like the terrain is getting even flatter below the point where he first hit, so more speed / distance doesnt give that much more height...

Re: [GreenMachine] Pad Up, Pound In
I'm curious about what kind of PC (size and vents) he had on. It looks like it follows him for quite a long way.

Re: [base698] Bike BASE Jump
wow, he almost hits at the same time as the bike, then it comes crashing down though his topskin an lines or whatever..

Re: [epibase] Bike BASE Jump
Strange, I though we traditionally jumped off cliffs rather than hillsides.

Clearly, you have not followed the latest developments in wing suit flight. Tongue

Got me bang to rights...

Re: [base698] Bike BASE Jump
I can say from personal experience that the last road I would want to exit from is that goat track. It's basically slippery gravel with no traction at all. Hat's off for charging hard and all that...

Re: [TomAiello] Bike BASE Jump
Maybe if he had used a large wingsuit, he would have been able to outfly the ledge?

(just kidding...)

Re: [Hajo] Bike BASE Jump
I know what I see . He needed to purchase and wear more GoPro's . For editing a more entertaining YouTube BASE Vid.
The jumper also failed miserably in judgment of his skills, assessment of Object jumped and in the equipment he used to make a 'successful BASE jump '
But all in All, I give him 8 points out of a possible 10 awarded, just for being tough and taking his beating like a man .

Video from his helmet cam is so EPICTVCool

Bicycle BASE Stunt Jump
Maybe more plywood covered in grip tape so he
could pedal from take off to launch, hmmmm...

Yeah, what he did was brave but has little to do
with my missions, my crew carries a med kit, a
hand saw, and some rope. This performer knew
it was going to go badly, look at all the rescue
he had in place. I would not do that jump even
if there was a truck winch to replace the chain
of humans and a chopper to replace the van.

Edited to Add:
Just watched your link to the 38 seconds of
helmet camera footage, thanks Lukasz_Se!!
Alright, so he was going considerably faster
than the I thought based on the 4:25 video.
<shaking my head> more balls than brains

Re: [base698] Bike BASE Jump
This too was forwarded to me by a coworker. It seemed like a pointless pursuit and another video that adds to the annoying stigma that base jumpers are 'brainless adrenaline junkies'.

BASE is a pointless pursuit. We're not going to cure cancer here. This is a recreational activity, and like all recreational activities is basically pointless.

"Whuffo you want to try that bike jump fo'?" is basically the same question as "whuffo you want to BASE jump fo'"?

The beauty of BASE is that we're out doing things that are basically pointless except for our desire to do them. Let's not lose sight of that.

Hard to argue with that. I guess it's easy for us to justify what we're doing and think someone else is doing something pointless but no doubt there's a bunch of people looking at us thinking, what the hell is he doing that for.

I guess the difference is that I'm not a whuffo, in either BASE or MTB, and I could instantly see several ways in which that was almost guaranteed to end badlyTongue

You mean like the way he rode of a fucking hillside. Or that he didn't have any training wheels.

Re: [Fledgling] Bike BASE Jump
For what it is worth from a former skydiver and former fledgling BASE jumper...

True, "its BASE and who are we to judge we jump off of stupid shit all the time and yadda yadda yadda."

However, I think it is perfectly OK to step outside of that mindset for a moment and look at this critically and say, "come on, this was ill-conceived, appeared to have low probability for success, and was poorly executed on top of it". I know that sort of sounds like "the place had horrible food and small portions on top of it" but WTF.

The thing that struck me immediately was:
PEDAL PEDAL PEDAL!!!!!! like crazy for 100 yards or more up the trail then kill off MOST of that momentum from a overly sharp turn onto the ramp. He coulda started pedaling like 20 feet from the ramp and achieved the same result.

My .02 from someone who has no cliff experience and no bike BASE experience, but WTF, free speech and all that.
