Paraglider Cutaway Setup
I'm looking to rig a cutaway for paraglider jumps (of the sort where you are hanging by a rope below the paraglider).

My rig has integrated risers and articulated legstraps, so I'm figuring that the simplest way to do it is to rig some webbing through the hip rings and through a No 8 style ring (like this one: http://www.paragear.com/...cts/10000174/H3800B/) and then use an extra mini riser I have lying around and some climbing rope to attach me to the glider.

Does anyone have a better setup idea? Any reason this wouldn't work?

I use an old skydiving riser, carabinered on front/aft risers to either hip ring. Use a black diamond figure 8 on the paraglider side as the 'big ring' and put a 20cm cutaway cable on the toggle as a cutaway handle.

Perfect. It didn't dawn on me to reverse the whole setup; thanks.

Be careful though, be sure your PG pilot understands the drastic decrease/reversal of roll stability with an increased distance between CG and CL/CP. If they are a noob pilot it is much safer to use a tandem kit and jump from the harness.

It also helps to NOT used fixed length "Y" on the pilot/glider. Use a loop (depending on size of pilot harness, a double runner between glider carabiners works fine) with a carabiner to attach to the figure 8, so it can slide back and forth to equalize load on glider risers, otherwise the instability goes dynamic and you have an automatic, uncoordinated wingover machine.

I was actually not refereeing to your, um, experience...

but yeah it is an EXCELLENT example.

Nope, we both walked away, sore for a few days. Soft snow is a good thing.

Hey guys can you make a simple drawing of a good setup from attachment on paraglider biners to base j

I'll be starting with a simple ride in a tandem harness and work my way up from there, but before I do I should probably have a better understanding of what you wrote in this bit.

Is the attached picture accurate?

Also - Depending on the location of the reserve handle in relation to the glider carabiners, couldn't that setup potentially obstruct the paraglider's reserve?

(I'm just beginning with paragliding so I don't have a harness with which to check out for myself)

I guess once I'm gone he could easily pull the double runner into his lap, but until then it looks like it could entangle.

(Not that I'd want to land a paragliding reserve as one of two people dangling from it in an odd double pendulum configuration, but it's good to know the limitations)

Your pic is what I was describing, yes. And the pilot should be aware and have experience and know where to run the loop to avoid rescue handle interference. And the both of you doing it from scratch could get ugly. This is probably something to learn how to do outside of the internet.

Re: [Calvin19] Paraglider Cutaway Setup
I won't be relying only on the internet. There are a few PG pilots in my area who have done and do this kind of thing, and I will only bother to try with them.

However, since I'm living abroad and my local language skills are mediocre at best, it feels a lot better to get the variables explained in decent English before I give it a shot with the inevitable amalgam of terrible English, even worse Turkish and hand gestures...

But seriously, thanks for the explanation. I assumed that it would be more complex than clipping in and running off, and you did a good job of explaining exactly why.

Tandem harness can also lead to funny situations. Especially if you are low on altitudeLaugh
