Afternoon Terrain Flying
wanted to get an idea and hear some people's thoughts and experiences about terrain flying in the afternoon -

with solar heating, lift , sink, turbulence , valley winds and all is it best to save those flights for the mornings and evenings when conditions are calmer or it doesn't really make that much of a difference ?

Look at brevent as an example. More flights are done there in the morning than the afternoon, yet all the incidents there have been in the afternoon.

yup,. 6/6 at brevent in the afternoon. proxy is not an option in turbulence and makes canopy landing around trees and canyon very dangerous,, get up at 4 am, and nap in the afternoon, jump at sunset or wait for morning

Yes it can make a difference and the difference can be fatal.

I see a similarity between your question and a question like; If one pulls the trigger of a loaded vs unloaded gun while looking into the barrel will there be a significant difference?
Are you from the flatlands? Let me know.

Micrometeorology isn't as black and white as a loaded vs unloaded gun. This was a recent question asked of me and I posted it thinking it may help others out. With the speeds involved in ws proxy , it's a valid question.
Currently living at 2800m where the low oxygen levels do have an adverse effect on brain activity Wink

Re: [shortleash] Afternoon Terrain Flying
Generally, yes.

It can depend on conditions/season. We had a few days in October at Brevent for example, where we were able to fly in the couloirs all day because of cool stable conditions. Yesterday we were able to jump between 12 and 2:00 near Chamonix, and in July this would never be comfortable.

Can't recommend Understanding the Sky enough, a must read for all air sports.

Quite the contrary. treat all guns as loaded and all jumps as a risk.
Doing a saddle or ledge flyby of a desired 2 meters with a 8 m accuracy window aint too smart. Also, read the book that Lau recommended. Or just fly conservative.
