Should base packing be this easily found?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUvIKJcsN14

Found this video on youtube while surfing the other day and I can't help but think something this extensive and not time lapsed is a very bad idea.

Whats stopping anyone from just snagging up some gear and thinking they can go for it. It may be a good reference for some. But danger for others.

Wondering if anyone else thinks this is not the best idea to be easily found online?

yeah maybe we need licenses and a governing regulatory body and rules and limits and people to enforce those rules and limits...

Youre right, people with no experience shouldnt be able to learn to pack for free, they should have to pay for a video. Next thing you know, people are going to want to start BASE jumping by getting to know local jumpers, and not just paying $1000 to get brought to the perrine! Shenanigans!

You should never take your laptop or phone into the ocean , that's just asking for trouble

Re: [Flyslow] Should base packing be this easily found?
why would you think this is a bad idea? its an instructional video. videos teaching tiny young boys how to handle semi automatic assualt rifles in the middle east are a bad idea.............

In other circles things of this nature are actually done in the interest of harm reduction!

I've chatted to a few crazies that think they can learn from the internet.... It scares the sh!t out of me if i'm honest.

I think it's a bad idea as well

I actually support the video being easily acessable and am pro harm reduction.

what a vicious cycle!! if every soldier worldwide would drop their weapon, and instead pick up a woman, the world would be a better place.

Re: [Flyslow] Should base packing be this easily found?
It has happened.
A guy bought a rig off ebay, sorted out packing from the intarweb, slider up. Went and jumped the Idaho Bridge while his lady ground crewed. She watched him snivel into the ground. His body survived. Serious brain trauma, coma etc. It was the wrong bridge according to reports. a much lower one than Perrine.
Even though I dont like it, These events are rare. It is after all the Age of Info.
Mentoring or teaching BASE or life for that matter is about conveying a survivable attitude.
Tech info is needed but attitude is paramount. Rigging skills can save your life, Attitudes can help one prevent
from getting into the situation in the first place.
That is the next level after the age of Info I think. The age of Attitude.

Re: [TransientCW] Should base packing be this easily found?
Two off topic comments.

First, what do you mean semi automatic? They've got real guns there. Full rock and roll AK in every home. It's a home defense weapon there.

Second, If every solder in the world were to drop his weapon and grab a girl not only would we have scratches on all those fine weapons but we would have a sever spike in over population even worse then we have right now. It could totally destroy all human life on this planet.

On topic. Some knowledge is legitimately dangerous. Knowledge of how to build a nuclear bomb. During the Manhattan project a concerted effort was made to suppress the spread of that knowledge. Notice how long that lasted. Has any one ever really seceded in suppressing information. Once it's out in the world there is no stopping it. Just saying that at this point there is not a hope and prayer of that working so we might need to start looking at this in some other way. Just saying.

learning the technical aspects of basejumping is probably the easier part; making smart decisions and staying alive is another.

WOW, natural selection at it's best!

There are plenty of videos like this one on Youtube, I have seen few with very detailed description and great camera work. I don't think they do much harm though, I think videos of people scraping their finger nails on cliffs cause way more fatalities than this :P

The base quest guys (AKA footloose in africa) ended up approaching base in the correct way. I know one of th guys and I had a problem with them wanting to jump some of my sites without experience but they seem to be doing it right.

Whats wrong with it? They were testing to see if the packjob opened properly and symmetrically...which it did. It's not their fault the keg steered the parachute into some big rocks. Beer has been known to contribute to poor canopy skills.
