FJC vs Mentor course
Just wanted an opinion, a friend of mine, experienced base jumper who I believe has the skills to teach a course, offered to teach me. He has taught several other people who I know and I think are competent jumpers. My concern with this versus a FJC is that 1) He doesn't teach base courses all the time, and 2) After the course, I won't be able to continue under his mentorship because I live in the US and he in Canada. I don't want to be lacking any fundamental skills when I am back home jumping.

For those reasons, I think a FJC would probably be better, and move to a mentor after that. I thought most people here recommend FJC's rather than mentor run courses.. opinions? I would move to a mentor type situation after an FJC.

Sounds like you could pretty easily do both.

I'd do that.

Yeah, I think I will do FJC + possibly some jumps after with my friend, then find a local mentor after.

There's no difference unless you live in the same town you take your FJC. After any FJC, you won't be able to continue under their wing anyway once you move back home.

Why not take the course from your friend and then find a mentor? If you take a FJC, you will still have to find a mentor.

Think about that for a minute...

FJC vs Mentor -- Why Either Or ??
Thinking of it as A or B is limited...

Consider A + B + C + D + E is safer,

Where:

A = FIRST JUMP COURSE

B = MENTOR/COACH

C = OTHER JUMPERS

D = BOOKS/INTERNET

E = EXPERIMENT/INVESTIGATE

There are a shit load of super experienced base jumpers in Colorado. None of them are shy about it and a few teach FJC's. Why won't they work with you?
