Re: [lesoucer] Removable Body Armor Spine Protection for BASE Jumping
Just to get this a little bit back on topic:
The idea of back protection in general is a good one in principle as landings, in particular with sketchy landing areas (e.g. boulders, construction sites) might hurt if you do not land perfectly on your feet.
In general, any protector will add "bulk" to your back and increase the tension on your closing loops or Velcro. (Is anyone except me still jumping a Velcro rig? I might try to make that a poll...) Just be aware of that and check it before you set out to jump any object in that configuration.
The placement of any back protector is, IMHO, a little more delicate. If you place it in a jacket or wear just the protector under your clothing (as in snowboarding and motocross), you are most likely to have the protection in the right place at the right time. If you place it in the rig, I would be concerned that at the time of impact, the protection would most likely be too high on your back as the entire container is pulled "up" towards your starting configuration as you are loading your legstraps and the rig is pulled towards your shoulders by the canopy above your head.
When jumping an object that I feel requires additional protection, my personal choice is to jump either a Peak Performance jacket with a removable POC protector, or a Fox Motocross protector with additional elbow and shoulder protection.
Blue skies,
