NPS & Gov shutdown?
If the US government do end up having a government shutdown will you be able to access parks or are parks closed during this period ?
... you can see where I'm heading with this, but don't post anything specific out loud Tongue

Re: [dan_inagap] NPS & Gov shutdown?
In 1996, there were still some rangers on patrol at the parks. If I remember correctly, Yosemite basically shut the main gates (many miles from the park). However, I do remember many jumpers making some extra jumps during the last shutdown.

For those wondering, I'm told a government shutdown should not affect Bridge Day BASE jumping.

Last time, Yosemite had the gates closed and rangers on duty at the gates, but very few people still in the park itself. I spent a couple days in the Valley and saw very few other people.

I believe they have decided to raise the debt ceiling and postpone any kind of "shutdown".

Today's adventure is NOT about the debt ceiling.

It is a continuing resolution that will provide money for the govmint to operate in the absence of a budget, which the Senate has refused to pass for five years and counting. If the CR does not pass before midnight, then comes the "shutdown."

The debt ceiling isn't about providing money for the govmint to operate; it's about being able to write hot checks to cover money already spent. failure to increase the debt ceiling does not result in a so-called "shutdown" -- it may result in the US govmint bond rating being downgraded, as it was the last time there was a debt ceiling fight.

That joust comes next, after this one.

On a happier note, two guys jumped from some bldg near the new WTC bldg and the cops are looking for them and this news made it to the Drudge Report... as Jeb discovered, His Majesty Mayor Bloomersberg doesn't cotton t' sech shenanigans...

Yes, that's what they said on the 6pm news in NZ tonight, so I guess it must be true...

They even showed a picture of an NPS sign Smile. I couldn't believe it.

Funny, they are going to stop paying the Government workers but keep paying the senators. Awesome Frown

To quote a famous man..."funny country". Wink

Re: [MBA-FRANK] NPS & Gov shutdown?
What better a time to start working more WITH the NPS than when their backs are against the wall financially. Funding is at an all time low, staff is being cut, and the general public's interest in the outdoors is slipping with every new app added to the iPhone.

The more positive interactions we have with them at the moment the better.

So take donuts, coffee and bring funds raised to get them through the week?

Re: [MBA-FRANK] NPS & Gov shutdown?
Wait, they "shut down"?

Funny, around here things seem pretty normal.

Maybe we ought to make this a permanent shutdown...I bet we'd all be better off.

Indeed. What if they have a shutdown and nobody notices?

Back on topic (a little):

One of my friends who is in a position to know tells me that the law enforcement rangers are considered to be "essential personnel" so they are still on duty, but they have almost no one to watch (because they're emptying the parks out of visitors). Which means that it will probably be harder to jump during the "shut down" than it would be normally.

I saw a picture on CNN where the NPS had barricaded off the WWII memorial and appeared to have something like 20 times their normal staff on hand to enforce the barricade. Looks like their "shut down" is mostly political theater, because they obviously have money to pay their security people overtime.

Nah. Adam's a pretty moderate guy, politically.

BTW, it would be really helpful for everyone else if you could include a "/green" at the end of your posts.

Is that the one the group of Veterans broke down the barricades and entered anyway?

its what happens when u read a sentence half way and say 'eureka!'
4 example this sentence from Help:
"Markup can be added by typing in the appropriate code, such as bold"

"EUREKA!!!"

Or, for example, by using the "/i" code, so that everyone doesn't keep rolling the italics through there posts...

Well that's because you live in one of the best parts of the world.

And I'm sure there are a couple other (best parts...) in the USA?

All non-essential personal are not allowed to "volunteer" or attend work in any way by way of law otherwise it is seen as collusion with the government. So it's a pity NPS is considered essential.

Only the law enforcement and security personnel are considered "essential." Most of the NPS employees are not. Which may say something about how things operate in the USA these days.

New Zealand would be my choice...

1. No language barriers

2. We need doctors

3. We need BASE jumpers

I think NZ is a safer bet for you. I believe the Swiss barely accept Americans to visit the country, let alone move there. The only thing they have in common with you guys is guns, every household has an assault rifle! Likely to defend their culture and neighborhood from any Americans trying to move in... :)

I think they just calibrate it by body weight, so Americans have to go through the paperwork twice.

Re: [dan_inagap] NPS & Gov shutdown?
Skip the political bullshit you monkeys and let's get practical. Any friends heading to a certain park, this update on access came across the interwebs today:

"Those attempting to enter with campground or hotel reservations today were turned away...
However, through traffic, such as motorists heading to the east side of the Sierra along Tioga Road, are being allowed in and entrance fees are not being collected...
During the shutdown, stopping to enjoy the scenery or taking a hike is prohibited...
Roads to Glacier Point and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias are also closed.

And (http://www.fresnobee.com/2013/10/01/3529789/yosemite-closes-gates-because.html)

And yes, I'm aware the NPS Stasi periodically check this site, but they're furloughed and have better things to do at the moment than read your inane banter. Safe jumps kiddies...
