Climbing helmets
What do you guys think of jumping ( short delays) with a climbing helmet?

They provide better protection than most ( if not all ) open face skydiving helmets and they are also quite light/comfortable...

thanks!

Re: [roam82] Climbing helmets
You are leaving out some important variables, what kind of low jumps, building, antenna, span, earth?

I would say its not enough protection though, its more designed for falling rocks to glance off your head. At least from my understanding. I wouldnt say they offer any more or less protection than a skydiving helmet. but they are light and comfy. thats what you should go for in base, as light and comfortable as you can get.

EDIT: Beginner forum, I highly recommend using a full face helmet for most low jumps. it offers the best amount of protection from random shit. i use the Giro downhill helmet with visor removed.

Re: [JBag] Climbing helmets
I think the new generation of climbing helmets go farther down on the back of the head...but its true that they dont protect the sides at all...Speaking of shock absorpbtion I do think its better than a skydiving helmet...

Say for spans or towers/antennas...

I jump a skiing helmet, they offer excellent protection and are light and comfortable if you don't want to go the full face route

Re: [roam82] Climbing helmets
I made hundreds of jumps wearing a Petzl Ecrin Roc many years ago.

I think there are better choices, but a climbing helmet is a lot better than nothing.

i use something like this.

it's a bit bulky, but pretty light and should offer decent protection..

Re: [roam82] Climbing helmets
I would think that a climbing helmet is better than nothing. However, climbing helmets are designed for protecting the top of your head in the event that a rock or a piece of pro is dropped from above. The same way a hard hat for construction is designed. Climbing helmets don't really protect the sides, the front or the back of the head in the event of an object strike or crash landing.

I like ProTechs, they are light weight and offer all around protection. I've also looked at some of the new light weight football helmets...

Re: [roam82] Climbing helmets
get a full face mountain bike helmet as some of the others have posted. a climbing helmet like that is not sufficient for what we do. most of the highest rated helmets (other than motorcycle) reach their limits at 20 mph. any exit speed or canopy speed in an accident will be close to that mark.. protect your head !!!

Re: [sinjin] Climbing helmets
are the six six one full faces still preferred by some here? They seem to be the lightest fully rated/certified full faces.

Re: [samadhi] Climbing helmets
Thanks to all for your inputs!

I own a Specialized DH full face. It is ultralight and very confortable. It would be nice to compared it with Protec and 661 helmets people seam to like for base.

I will forget about the climbing helmet idea and give that one a try.

Thanks again,

I recently bought a 661 full face to replace my worn out Giro Remedy. I find the 661's chin strap closure (it's a double back D ring arrangement) to be annoying compared to the fastex buckle on the Giro.

Re: [TomAiello] Climbing helmets
They make aftermarket quick release buckles for helmet chin straps that are pretty neat and easy to install. I use this one for my motorsports helmets. It has a metal to metal clip, which is better than the plastic ones in my opinion.

why aren't you using your specialized helmet?

Re: [Dadsy] Climbing helmets
Because I don't jump, yet. I'm going to the Perrine this fall. I have a pretty good collection of helmets of all sorts, just trying to decide which one to take with me!

Re: [roam82] Climbing helmets
if it is light weight impact rated and you are comfortable wearing it then I wouldn't be buying something new
I wear a triple 8, for the above reasons
