Is it ok to start base with large wingsuits?
Lets say there is a jumper who made 200 skydives with a X2 or V4 or whatever high performance suit. So he goes to Brento, makes a couple of track jumps(wtih those jumps being his first). Then he puts on his X2 and of he goes? Is that how it should be done nowadays?
It seems that there is a lot of people who feel that this approach is correct, that you should start jumping in the suit that you did those 200 skydives with.
They feel that switching back to something simpler, like a phantom, getting current with it, and doing your first jumps in it to get comfortable with wingsuit base, is just a big waste of time. And that that approach is actually more dangerous.
Is it?

I don't believe it's about the size of the suit you start with, it's a matter of getting the exit down before using a wingsuit.

I don't see anything wrong with the first ws base jump being on the suit they know how to fly/are current on. Though, I'm sure everyone has their own opinions.

this is a very very good point...

seen a lot of this lately, but it works in some cases...others not

I think regardless of the number of jumps on the suit you have out of a plane, a larger wingsuit is more difficult to exit in. The feeling of flight 10 seconds in might be the exact same, but bigger suits start flying more quickly and are more susceptible to badness with asymetrical exits and early inputs. I absolutely think people should do their first jumps in phantom class suits, regardless of their experience because as someone else just said, its not be flight, its the exit thats harder.

I identified a person at the morgue 2 days ago that did his 1st and last ws BASE jump on a venom. He could fly it out of a plane. He was a very current sky jumper. A very inexperienced BASE jumper. 20ish jumps over several years. Many experienced BASE jumpers that knew him told him very seriously why he should not do what he did.
Please slow down and enjoy the beautiful fucked up game we call BASE. One step at a time.

+1
get back to your P2/P3, when you make that mistake off your first base jump with it you will have a better chance of correcting it. it being a waste of time is a justification not logic.

I concur, doctor

That's why the last two seasons I have jumped nothing but Phantom's. I would rather fly my Phantom well than fly a big suit shitty. Funny how people think big suits will make you good... I have seen several occasions where people in MUCH larger suits flew SLIGHTLY further, as far, or even not as far than me in my P2 and P3. and I am not that good... Unimpressed

And as REDAKTOR said, taking the time to become current (specifically instability recovery) in the smaller suit again before bringing it to BASE. It is easier to correct instability in a smaller suit than in a larger one.

Another importact factor is the choice of object for the first WS BASE jumps: something forgiving with a long rock drop. This scenario used ITW, which is good; there is also Kjerag. I think balloon jumps are good training as well, given they cannot replicate a fixed object exit, they can give the jumper the sense and feel of exiting in still air, body position, plenty of time to correct an unstable exit, how the wingsuit feels as it inflates and starts to fly, etc...

how many base jumps does your example have. think this is a factor as well.

i fucking love this thread man. i own a P3, and i have absolutely no intention of upsizing. before i exit off of something big, im flying up to vegas to get some balloon jumps with my base rig to at least experience a few exits with my arms and legs restricted.

then ill take it off kjerag or brento. or mt. ****** =)
i think this is a sound plan. im not trying to get too hard to the paint

1 PCA, 3 tracking from Brento.

Did he assume what he thought was the track position or did he actually track, like track over the steps and open high etc.?

By track I meant he put on a tracking suit, and assumed a tracking positionSmile The track itself was below average, more like breakoff from formation.

In my BASE course, I would really emphasize tracking exits for subterminal tracking. No boxman exits. This would seem to me as a very important point for a wingsuit exits as one can not do the boxman. If that is his style which it more than likely is. Change one thing at a time. If he cant exit stable in a track position, a wingsuit will only amplify the instability IMHO.

if the guy in that photo tries to pull that shit in a ws he will end up on his back kicking and screaming faster than you can say, "that was the worst f@cking example of a tracking exit i have ever seen"!

That statement shows your level of ignorance. I dont mean that in a derogatory way. The upper body is in the track position already and the lower body is controlling the rotation to the correct angle for tracking. If one goes with the knees in the middle position, one can bring them up to counter a headdown rotation or push them down to counter a head high rotation. This is all within the first second. Maybe second and a half before the wind has any strong effects on body position.

You are not Sparticus. You are coming off like a tool. You have been posting in the Technical and Incidents Forums like it's Bonfire on DZ.com. In the process you are showing major disrespect for some very skilled and intelligent people in this sport, both living and dead. Please take a break. Read and learn. You will live longer.

Or tool on.

I agree. Beyond annoying. Is there a way to /ignore people so their posts don't show up for you? He'd be the first and probs only one on my list.

agreed, ImSparticus needs to go away. i don't post much anymore, but do read; and seeing his snide remarks in a thread about a persons death is quite ludicrous. I sent him a PM with my name telling him it would be best to chill out. I'm sure you can gauge his response based on his public posts.
