Re: [base698] How did this come about?
Martin Tilley at Asylum organized it. He put in a lot of effort over several years to make it happen.

That would be great if they had a new bridge day there!!! much closer to home. Even better if it was like the potato bridge!!!!

Re: [base698] How did this come about?
I can agree, it would be nice to have more legal safe objects to learn on.

Nice work Marty! Imagine that carnival that it would become if it became like TF.

It would be shut down immediately Wink It's just not the same level of easy.

At the end of the jumping day it got, in Marty's own words "A little spicy". The wind that is. Just like Tim said, not the same level of easy at all. Big and fun but nowhere near the same outs as Potato.

And he did a phenomenal job. Many stars aligned for this event, a "trial run" if you will. I imagine additional information will be forthcoming eventually, from those involved, when the time is appropriate.

118 jumps by 24 jumpers from 730am-1230pm, no incidents, no injuries. All legal. We were informed at the am briefing with CalFire that jumping would be shut down immediately following an incident of any kind, Incident being defined as anything other than a stand up landing in the primary LZ. The stakes were super high, totally basejumping for bureaucrats, and it went as well as it possibly could have, being basejumping and all.

The situation being what it was, the jumpers all were super professional, everyone jumped well within their abilities, the public loved it and if that interview is any indicator the suits dug it too.

If things continue to progress as they seem to be,In a few years, everyone is going to owe Marty and crew one hell of a thank you.

Hand pick 20 talented jumpers who all agree to keep things tight and not showboat for one day, and you'll probably have an event that's relatively trouble free.

Open that bridge for one day to the general BASE jumping public and I'd bet someone has a helicopter ride out of there on the very first day.

Nobody has been killed on a BASE jump from that bridge, but several lives have been dramatically altered. I think the fact that the bridge is illegal to jump is pretty much the only reason there hasn't been a string of fatalities there.

I have about 100 bandit jumps there and I think three legal ones. The legal ones were cool but my vote would be to keep it the way it has always been. Jump it quietly, be careful, and go home.

This bridge has teeth.

All that being said, good work Marty and all the jumpers out there doing it right.

From 2:20 to 2:22... woman says, "between our state and federal partners".

Was there any federal involvement?

Any more info about future events or legal days? I heard Sundays could be open but not sure how reliable the source was.

There have been several BASE & Bungee events on the Auburn ravine bridge.
The folks in Auburn are happy to pony up the bridge for the right price.

Yeah dude, Sundays and Thursdays are OK now, as long as you exit the from the rail and shred the epic gnar.

If anyone tries to stop you, the recommended response is "Im Brendan Cork Mother Fucker" then flip off the cop and jump.

FWIW, this technique is only effective if Charley Kurlinkus' mom is in the landing area and you want to get laid. It's important to note, however, that both she and the police will be confused if you say im when you mean I am.

He's a doctor, it's like a continuation of their stereotypical poor hand writing for the 21st century. It's okay, afterall he's saving lives!

State Park Rangers all the way from California are in Fayette...

Please excuse my ignorance, but are State Park Rangers different from NPS Rangers?

State park rangers for the national park that is really a state park. Gotta love news reports.

Re: [SLAMBO] How did this come about?
Am I being naïve or are the authorities mellowing towards BASE jumping in your parks?

Re: [MBA-FRANK] How did this come about?
My response was to the question about future events there.

Dealing with any form of government is a pain in the ass. Local is difficult and slow, state is even more difficult and even slower, and any branch of the federal government is damn near impossible. Hats off to Asylum for the first event.

It is obvious the park officials see it as an event based marketing channel to drive traffic and visibility to an otherwise pretty remote area. My wife's family is 40 mins from Auburn and if it wasn't for that object, I would never have made my way there. It is a cool area aside from the bridge.

As far as NPS authorities mellowing, definitely not toward BASE. It is kind of funny, I have a couple of buddies that work for Homeland Security (Not the goofy TSA guys at the airport, but actual agents). The NPS is kind of the butt of their jokes. When I talked to one of them about jumping in the parks, he sarcastically said "the rangers are just smart enough to protect huge, open, plots of land from the massive damage that would be caused by BASE Jumpers. The millions of tourists that are actually fucking the national parks up should be thankful that they are protected from you derelicts."

No other division of the Interior is as ill regarded as the NPS. It is pretty bad when other feds think you are a joke division. Me, personally, I tell my buddies that they are just as much of a joke as the NPS, but then again, to me, all law enforcement and government is...except for the state park officials looking to put on this event at Greenie...I love those guys!Tongue
