long shot but worth a try: anybody have a skydive rig to loan for some practice jumps before BASE course
Hey I figured this would be a LONG shot since I only know a couple people personally in the BASE community (and I don't think they post here). I am looking for a skydiving rig to borrow to make 10-20 jumps out of a plane to test my Troll 205 canopy before I do a BASE course (with Tom A) later this fall. I am hoping maybe somebody has an older rig in the closet that they would not mind loaning to me (I guess this involves some trust!? I can only promise you that I am trustworthy/reliable). I have sold my skydiving rig this summer so that I could make ends meet (and sadly it would not have fit my 205 anyways since it was designed for small skydiving canopies). The possibility for buying a beater rig of course exists but it seems wasteful to buy a rig to make 10 jumps with! I really have very little interest in making skydives so don't see a real reason to own a skydive rig (other than to test this canopy before taking it off the bridge).

In case you were worried, I have a bit of skydive experience (400 jumps) so I would be able to treat your gear safely and conservatively.

Funds are extremely tight for me and I am pretty much stretching my expendable income by getting used BASE gear and the cost of the BASE course (which I really consider pretty prudent/wise in the long run) - not to mention transporting myself out to Twin.

What I could do for you!?

Pay shipping costs to and from my house.

If the gear is old/out of date I would be MORE THAN HAPPY to pay for a repack so its in date for you when I return it after a few weeks of use.

I would promise in the case of an emergency and something is unrecoverable (such as freebag, etc) then I would replace it for you on my cost.

buy you beer when/if we meet in person Laugh (or if you don't drink then buy you a dinner or lunch or something!?)

be eternally grateful to you for helping me get started in a safe/slow way Angelic

Like I said I know this is a long shot so I don't expect to be knocked down with offers to use your old Vector II in the closet or whatever...this came to me because I remember in the old Blinc days there used to be a skydiving rig changing hands for this reason exactly.

Peace!!! SmileTongue

Why not put it in a rental rig?

Surely with that many sky jumps you know a jumper that has a rig that will hold a 205?! Where do you jump? Who do you know? Any references? Collateral? I would be willing, but that is a risk I would have to be covered up front. I have a Dolphin D5 that will hold your canopy. The reserve is old and my rigger told me that was the last time he would sign off on it... So pack neat!

First off, yes sky-jumping your BASE canopy a few times is a good thing to do before your FJC. 3-4 hop n' pops should be all the familiarization you need provided you’re a fairly competent/current jumper and you use the altitude for constructive canopy work and not front flips or something. Most DZs will let you put your BASE canopy in a student rig. Rig rental for four jumps should be like $100. To get the most out of your jumps, remember to spend some of the canopy time flying the canopy with risers simulating single and double riser object avoidance and heading correction techniques. Do some stalls, and practice both full flight and braked approaches.

Well, this is an old thread...

So here's an update. I loaned him my sky rig a few months ago and he has jumped it with his BASE canopy several times. He met me in Knoxville on his way to Spud span to return my sky rig. I just received a message saying he has jumped about 30 times.
