I have just purchased a Infra-red Night vision Lens for my go pro hero 3, and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them? How well they work? Are they good for night base? It would be awesome to get some footage, as most of our jumps are in the dark.

Why did you buy something you know nothing about? And why don't you shoot some video at night and find out for yourself? Trying not to be a smart ass, but that's like me buying a vibrator and asking everybody else how well they work, when I could shove it up my ass and find out for myself?!?!

If not, i can't see the lense working since the gopro has a built in Ir filter. For the lense to work you would have to open your gopro and take out that filter.

Can you provide us with a link please.

I'm stuck at work, and I cant jump for a few months.
I bought it out of boredom and desperation. There appears to be a simple way to remove the ir block in the camera beneath the lens, and then replace the lens with a compatible one, which I bought from ragecams.
I watched everything out there on the internet and spoke to some tech savvy people that I work with.
No problems, i was not even asking for advice, just wanting to find out if its already popular.
I'll just try it out and see how it goes.

Actually work was not all that keen on lending me our work equipment for my nocturnal activities, but a few friends recommended the rage cams option, and it seems to be a viable option. Without the light amplification capabilities I feel like it cant be as good as NODs, which we usually just rape-tape to normal cameras, but we need some kind of light to see the ground at most jumps anyway so I'm hoping it will work. If it doesn't then its only a couple of hundred bucks wasted, but if it does, than expect some good posts in a couple of months.

On anther subject, and I'm sure I will get some bites here, I'm attempting to build a man-portable cliff set up human slingshot to open up more nice short sketchy cliffs. I have spent allot more dollars on that project, but still wont be terribly disappointed if it fails. Jumping is allot more important to me than a few bucks.

Anyway, enjoy that one.

if you bought the lense from rage cams the IR filter is already removed. the lenses work great for night shooting but you will need an external IR light source.
Also this lense will make your daytime video totally the wrong colors, you need a daytime filter for daytime shooting (also avalible at ragecams)
i have the gp3 black and took my camera apart and removed the IR filter and it worked but was impossible to get the focus right on it,
so i put it back together with the IR fliter and will be buying the ragecams lense whaen i can afford it.

Let me be the first to actually reply to what you posted. I modified my gopro hd1 with an IR lens from ragecams. You will also want an IR light to go with it, maybe two. I just attached the light for mine to the case with contact cement and it works pretty well for close up and exit shots.

Anthing further than that and its pretty much useless. Also it was a pain in the ass to focus the lens, because it is dependant on how far it is screwed into the housing. So it becomes pretty tedious trying to get it into focus.

For about $150, I think it was a worthwhile mod.

same story for me but i would add i don't think it was worth the money. even after adding 2 IR flashlights anything further away than 10' couldn't be seen at all. testing it indoors had much better results because the IR would have walls and the floor to reflect off of but standing on top of an antenna at night the footage was basically worthless. maybe there would be better results with a Hero 3 but i wouldn't spend the money to find out.

There are plenty of cheap infrared HD "sports cameras" available on Ebay. One actually looks like a GoPro knockoff I wouldn't be surprised if they have better quality than a modified GoPro, since they were purpose built for use in low-light conditions. I'm currently checking reviews on some, and will get one to play around with. They can be had for under $100.
