DeLorme InReach
I had a good talk with a company rep and this seems to be the best thing going for getting rescued/keeping significant others happy and less worried: http://www.rei.com/...klK:20130816200240:s

Obviously the rep is going to push his product, but my own side-by-side analysis thus far backs up his pitch. I have heard and read some pretty unhappy stuff with the Spot, and although quite a few people have successfully used them, some of the negative issues have prevented me from getting one. Old school PRBs are OK too, but two way comms with first responders is pretty nice.

they should have accelerometers on board that send an instant distress signal when velocity decreases rapidly

Unfortunately, this product, just like the spot works on their own satellite network. the 9.99$ a month fee is kinda BS too I feel.
Since these devices are a total last call/emergency device, I think personally I'll stick with the ACR, as they work off of the multiple international satellites, that are used in planes and boats, and are time tested and proven for S&R.
just my .02

Apparently DeLorme has a contract with the provider of DoD GPS services and they are using those satellites which apparently have full global coverage, including places that Spots have certifiably failed. I agree $10 a month kind of sucks, but having two way coms with SAR is pretty awesome. So is the ability to tell your spouse/lover/dungeon master that you're only late because you missed a turn and not because your leg was eaten by a velociraptor or you are being gang raped by forest nymphs.
