Ultra-low static line / dbag and brake settings
Hey all. I'm just curious where others stand in regards to dirty basement jumping and brake settings. For a ~110' span jump for example, I may want to use shallow brake settings to get better flare and flare with rear risers (even though it's usually not really necessary given good PLF, protection/armor, and wind conditions). My question has two primary variables: object height and wind conditions. How much of a difference in surge (amount of height consumed reaching flight speed) is observed with deep vs. shallow brake opening and would this affect choice of brake setting (given 0 wind and/or span) at jump heights as low as a <75' d-bag (not over water)? Would you use shallow breaks for any non-spans when static lining/d-bagging or is the risk of a 180 too much? How do wind conditions affect the answer to the first question for you?

And the more broad question...how much do you feel a d-bag helps in regards to heading performance and when would you prefer it over a static line?

Edit: bonus point question...from what height (d-bag, 0 winds) do you think the jumper's feet would hit the ground at parachutal stall? This is just a curiosity question obviously (and dependent on wingloading, canopy size, specific canopy, concentration of gnats in air, etc)...I figure that's begging for broken legs at the best if someone was jumping at that threshold.

There aren't really "right" answers for most of those kinda things so I just want to be clear, I have my own ideas on the subject and am not someone looking to get into ultra-low jumps following online advice Tongue Currently, I personally prefer deep-brake setting, full body armor, and intended PLF for anything that gets near that range (only exception is 110'+ span with IDEAL landing area...then I'd probably do shallow brakes). I normally don't even jump sub 150' anyway...

If anyone thinks advanced low-object jumping configurations shouldn't be discussed publicly, feel free to PM me (or mods remove the post). I just haven't been able to jump in a couple weeks and been letting my mind wander after watching video of some 60' jumps.

Would you mind sharing the 60' jumps...via PM?

D-Bag heading performance is mainly dependent on the holder of the D-Bag.

And crosswinds.

having jumped the 110' span, I'd say you'll be fine in DBS and have enough flare to stand it up/run it out without too hard of a slam. I mean... you can ask me on FB if you have any major concerns you want to address about it. As far as jumping with SBS, I feel if you take it too low in SBS, you run the risk of the forward surge adding into the downward surge into the ground... I KNOW that span can be done with full toggle flare on DBS. Are you still thinking SBS for it? Have you jumped it yet? S/L or PCA?
Have fun be safe Smile
