Hanwags
My Hanwags have served me well, but they are beyond wore out. I'm thinking of buying a new pair but I'm not sure if I want the Superfly or the Sky. From the description on Apexbase.com, the sky is lighter and more flexible, which prob also means it's less protective and less durable. Which one do you prefer? How significant does the difference seem in protection, durability, flexibility, and weight between the two boots?

Re: [hikeat] Hanwags
I prefer the Crispis.

Have you tried them?

Re: [TomAiello] Hanwags
I have not tried them. I've heard of them from you and others. I just looked them up and there are a lot of different models. Can you tell me which model you prefer and why you prefer them to Hanwags?

Re: [hikeat] Hanwags
I've had three pairs of the Airborne GTX. They've held up well, and I keep coming back to them.

They fit my feet better than the Hanwags, and they're also more flexible (easier to hike in) but have a removable ankle support, so you can have the extra protection for the jump, but still remove it for more flexibility when hiking.

Re: [TomAiello] Hanwags
I second the Crispi love.
I have had mine for close to 10 years and they are still in good shape, although I have lost one of the ankle supports. I have been on many, many journeys with these boots and they have held up very well. A bit stiff at times on hikes, but most high protection boots are that way.
One thing that is a bit of an issue is the velcro that covers the lower part of the laces. It makes it difficult to secure the tension snap on my older PhoenixFly track suit.

Re: [base570] Hanwags
I have an older pair where the velcro doesn't cover the laces, as well as newer pairs where it does.

Re: [hikeat] Hanwags
I prefer, NOT Bright Orange!

However I also prefer either to not be mostly out of stock.

So, unless you have little feet; and we all know what that means...

I have a pair in the classifieds for big boy feet.

Re: [hikeat] Hanwags
I Have had all three and my preference are the H Superfly's. The Crispi's and the H Sky's, though supportive, were definitely not as supportive as the Superfly's and, for some reason, maybe it is my huge frankenstein feet, H Superfly's are the only ones that really fit right. Caveat, the Crispi's and H Sky's are easier and more comfortable to climb and hike. The SuperFly's kind of suck in that aspect due to the weight and rigidity.

Re: [dmcoco84] Hanwags
I just saw on FB that Apex has both lines of Hanwags back in stock in actual men's sizes. Just grabbed another pair of Super Flys before they run out again. FYI, I loved the orange ones but they are not made in that color anymore Frown

Yeah, saw that on the website a few days before FB, but, not in my size... neither super or sky; very happy to see the orange is gone though. Sky are probably a lot nicer to hike in.

Hanwags suck

Re: [BASEMenace2] Hanwags
Have to beg to differ on this one. Crispis are for kids with girls feet and I am not familiar with any other brands that stack up for support. The Skys are a little better than the Crispis, but still for people with girly feet. Hence, why men with men size feet wear the Super Flys. If you know of a better more supportive boot, enlighten me so I can be proved wrong. I have no compunction about spending money on good protective gear.

Edit: No offense to those with girly feet. Tongue

Re: [douchekiller] Hanwags
Agreed Hanwags suck

Personally I think light hikers or trail running shoes in combination with DonJoy ankle braces are far more affective than Hanwags. The question i ask myself: in what shoes would I feel most comfortable jumping from an uncomfortable height to flat ground, similar to the landing area (without the aid of a parachute)? Definitely not those big clumsy boots, not to mention you have to hike in those big heavy things. Here's the link to the very best ankle braces I and other jumpers could find: http://www.djoglobal.com/products/donjoy/velocity-es-extra-support
However, gay Don says those boots get all the boys. So if thats what you're looking for, no judgment here ;)

When you have that level of reinforcement (those braces), doesn't that greatly increase the stress/damage to the knee/leg in many situations (taking out one major point of shock dissipation)? I'd think somewhere between nothing and those braces would be more appropriate...but I'm not very well informed on the subject, hence the question.

Re: [Zebu] Hanwags
I've broken both of my ankles, and would have preferred to break the tib/fib above the ankle instead. Larger bones heal much better.
Shortcut
Re: [Lau] Hanwags
Zebu is 100% correct. Ankle braces are a terrible idea. Orthopedically speaking, it is the same reason that, though pad manufacturers make wrist guards for skate, it is highly advised against using them because it significantly increases the likelihood of breaking the radius or the ulna in situations that it would otherwise no result in a break. I agree that H's are a little heavy for hiking, however, real men generally have strong enough legs to handle them. Tongue As far as support, they offer the perfect balance. FYI. I have been jumping Super Flys for a decade now.

As far as Gay Don, stop projecting Wink
