General BASE

Hanwag Hizell
Well... After over six years of use in five countries, and one "save" in Norway during my second year of use (minor broken ankle, likely would have been shattered to pieces)... my beloved Hanwags are starting to fall apart.

After going in the drink at Bridge Day 2012, what I had first thought was just waterlogged and heavy boots, as it got worse, realized that the sole on my left boot was detaching.

Unfortunately, Hanwag has been off smoking crack instead of filling Apex BASE's order. It appears I could get a new pair from somewhere else, but, I'd rather support Apex if I can't buy direct. And I can't fly my phantom without them, so in the mean time... I need to fix these things!

I've never had the need to fix any shoes or boots before; skater shoes never lasted long for me as it is. So any input would be appreciated; since I imagine I'll have one shot at it, otherwise all future attempts are gonna have me looking like Dakota Fred hobbling up to the exit point.

Been looking at using either Shoe Goo or Gorilla Glue.

Which is better? Anything better?

The sole is still attached at the toes for about 5 inches, so I'm also wondering how I'm gonna let this dry if it takes longer than I can hold. GG says clamp time is 1-2 hours... however, I don't see it working well in a vise; would if the detachment were reversed.

Any ideas?

West epoxy G/flex. Two small tubes are @ 30 bucks. You will have plenty left over for other stuff.

I buy mine direct from Germany, there are a few online stores. Fair prices.

So let me get this straight. You don't want to buy new boots because you can't buy them from a company that can't supply them?

As for the repair. When the sole started to come off of my old pair I tried unsuccessfully to glue it back on a number of times until I was pissed off enough to go buy a new pair. They did last 6 solid years so I was really just being a cheap cunt trying to squeeze a few more jumps outta them.

Find a cobbler or a real shoe shop in your area-- if they can't do a professional repair, they can probably find you a professional who can.

The repair will last much longer, and will be a lot cheaper than buying a new pair, and a far better result than you or I could do on our own. Epoxy might help get you by in the meantime. I have gotten a few professional resoles and never had any regrets.
