Fatality, Moab, Utah, USA, 21 June 2013
Does anyone have details on this incident?

I've heard:

Dirty Devil
Aerial
Possible bridle entanglement
Canopy extraction too low to achieve inflation

My information is all secondhand, though.

Does anyone have any details?

Re: [TomAiello] Fatality, Moab, Utah, USA, 21 June 2013
Aussie Legend Luke Chappell left us at 8am on the 21st.
Current theory is bridle wrap on belly mount camera setup, cleared just before impact.

Last 3 Aussies have gone in with bridle wrapsUnimpressed

Was this some kind of twisting aerial? I'm trying to picture how the bridle comes across the chest in a straight gainer or front. It seems pretty unlikely unless something went seriously off-axis or there was a hardcore crosswind?

At any rate, it sucks that he's gone. Luke sure knew how to have a good time Laugh

Just want to clarify that there is 0 evidence right now to support a bridle wrap, it is just speculation. He declared on the jump that he intended to do a double, but the only other jumper didn't actually see what happened past 1 second into the jump.

He was wearing a belly mounted camera, as usual, and had recently stalled a double at the bridge the week before, pitching on his back and rolling over into a 180. This was accompanied by singles, doubles and triples that were otherwise perfectly executed.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot of information available to discuss on this thread, but we've got an awesome "Crazy Luke Stories" group going on facebook if anyone wants to contribute :-)

Re: [srogers] Fatality, Moab, Utah, USA, 21 June 2013
Just for the sake of knowing what went wrong for those of you wondering, got the camera back today:

Under-rotated double, pitch on the back, pilot chute and bridle pass right by the belly camera.

Canopy extracted while he was on his back still, and it appears that the canopy snagged on the camera as it deploys, moving the position of the camera and then enveloping it completely. Impact at 6.5 seconds from the ~600 ft cliff, so there appears to have been minimal inflation.

Those are about all the details I have. message me if you have any other questions.

Also important to note: minimal sleep and food the day before. Also took a shit at the exit point and cleaned his asshole with PBR and his hand right before the jump. Not the can, actual beer. Classic Nuts.

That also to important note is probably stupid to post on the Internet!

Think access!!!

Re: [new2base] Fatality, Moab, Utah, USA, 21 June 2013
his body has been recovered so the jumper and scene of the accident have been investigated by authorities, critisizing the poster for adding the information surrounding the fatality is not productive, maybe providing the tertiary information that the jumper was possibly fatigued may spark good judgement in a future jumper choosing not to perform a high risk activity in less than 100% focus, our image and reputation in this sport are not scrutinized via this forum as much as they are at the scene of an incident where authorities must respond. And unfortunately recovering a body is a much more trying experience than stepping in someone else's shit, the fatality had much more to do with affecting access than did the jumpers conduct prior to the jump, and your head is not in the right place if you are more worried about access than trying to prevent another incident
