Buy Gopro or wait ?
Anyone think they will release a gopro 4 soon or is it safe to buy now ?

regardless i would avoid the 3 anyway. I personally own 3 and they are far from reliable even with the most recent firmware update. Just my opinion.

You must have a dud, I got one of the first 3's and I've never had a problem, the quality in night modes is insanely good as well. Only problem I've seen is people who don't know how to operate it correctly.

p.s. not aimed at you fuzrb14

Seeing that the Hero 1, Hero 2, and Hero 3 were released just about 1 year apart from each other, all around September time...You can expect to see the Hero 4 around September time.

Re: [veryformal] Buy Gopro or wait ?
I might be mistaken on something but afaik the first 3 went something like this:

Ambarella A2 Released Jan 8, 2007 : GoPro HERO January 2010 -> ~ 3 years
Ambarella A5 Released Jan 5, 2009 : GoPro HERO 2 October 2011 -> ~ 2 years 9 months
Ambarella A7 Released Mar 31, 2011 : GoPro HERO3 November 2012 -> ~ 1 years 8 months

So,

Ambarella A9 Released Jan 8, 2013 : GoPro HERO4? March - Aug 2014? -> ~ 1 year 3 - 8 months

The specs on the A9 chip sound nice,

In reply to:
In addition to 4K Ultra HD video resolution at 30 frames per second, the A9 supports high frame-rate video for capturing fast-action sports with 1080p video at 120 frames per second or 720p video at 240 frames per second.

with those release dates it looks like we wont see the A9 until GoPro Hero 5 :/

Last I heard from the UK importers they were fairly confident that GoPro would continue with annual pre-christmas releases.

Despise the Gopro black edition. What a fucking waste of money for SKYDIVING. I like it for BASE, i don't need that fancy remote shit that doesn't work anyway.

GoPro black is an excellent tool for those who understand how to operate it correctly.

Add a cobalt cage from redrockmicro and it's really something.

it also comes with an incredibly handy document called a "users manual" I would recommend referencing and understanding it, lest you become one of the grouchy grouches posting to this thread

So I've been holding off on this purchase for quite a while now, waiting to see if the many issues consistently reported on the internet are eventually worked out. However I continue to see very bad reviews (as recent as mid-June) from some pretty disappointed customers, despite the firmware upgrades released to address the issues. Are you saying that you've had none of these issues and that these disgruntled customers simply need to better comprehend the user's manual? I'm trying to justify this $400 purchase but just can't get over what seems to be a consistently poor user experience.

I bought a gopro 3 black and had the same issues most people were having (freezing, battery discharging, etc). If you contact customer service and go through all the troubleshooting steps and it still doesn't work, they'll send you a replacement. It was a huge pain in the ass for me to figure out if a step actually fixed it or not (took many times shooting video to know if it'd freeze again), but after I got the replacement gopro3 and updated the firmware/etc I haven't had any problems.

It's only worth it if you're willing to put the time in with customer service (via e-mail) until you get one that works. I'm still glad I got mine as the video quality is phenomenal. I wonder how many of their problems came from pointlessly trying to make it smaller and lighter while also greatly increasing the video capabilities.

Re: [jduff] Buy Gopro or wait ?
I can't speak for anyone besides myself but I've had no adverse issues with mine, purchased about 4 months ago.

Now of course comprehension of the manual has nothing to do with a faulty unit, thats just silly.

It's a powerful little camera, for 400$.. but you know that you get what you pay for, and in the camera scene, 400$ isn't very much. That being said, a camera that can shoot at 2k resolution for 400$ is otherwise unheard of..

No body will report that their goPro Black is working fine online, if you search for problems with it, that's what you'll find.

Make sure you have the fastest MicroSD possible and upgrade the firmware and you should be fine.

Like Avenfoto, I've had zero issues with mine. it performs a lot better than previous models. If you end up buying any other model of action cam you will just end up being disappointed with the footage quality.

Which card do you recommend? Seems people are having trouble with the Sandisk.

Re: [jduff] Buy Gopro or wait ?
I have a SanDisk ExtremePro U1, The Red and gold card. This is not to be confused with the Red and grey Ultra series card which is also classed as a U1. Class 10 micro SD cards will give problems and the mobile versions (Ultra) of the SD card too.

The Mobile version of the card is limited to 30mb/s while the red and gold card is limited to 95mb/s.

On the link you will see everything classed as 10 but the Ultra and pro cards will have a little U with a 1 inside printed on the card.

Good luck and I hope you are happy with the results.
