Where did you find the exclusions?

Their website is definitely misleading if BASE is excluded:

This is it, that moment you’ve been psyching yourself up for. The mountain is finally under you. You can see the horizon in front of you. You strap your chute on. Your friends double-check all your safety gear. You are ready to go. You take a deep breath. Begin running and just when the ground beneath you is running out, you jump. You are free falling. Then you open your parachute. You glide through the air.

That sure sounds like they're describing BASE to me. Exit from solid ground, free fall, then open a parachute?

yeah, it's very misleading. if i didn't have friends that recently talked with them on the phone specifically requesting if they still were covered i'd have never known. Crazy

So currently there is no travel insurance that covers BASE, correct? We're all just SOL for the time being?

World Nomad specifically says they do if you are a citizen of the USA and purchase their explorer plan.

Many of us bought insurance through Global Underwriters for the recent event in Mexico. However I am pretty sure someone on the trip after the fact said they found out it wouldnt have covered it even though we were told it would.

Took me 5 minutes to find the exclusions (Section 6aa):

"snowsports or parachuting unless you have purchased the WorldNomads.com Explorer Plan. Paragliding, mountaineering and base jumping are excluded from all plans"

Take care...

I think the policy is different in different countries. What did you select as your place of residence?

When I select USA, it indicates that "BASE jumping", "Skydiving" and "Parachuting" are all covered under the Explorer plan to $100,000.

But when I indicate that I am from Germany, it says "Base jumping * (no cover for this sport for purchases or extensions on or after 01 February 2012) (2)".

Perhaps we ought to look through the list to see what country has the best coverage, and then get someone in that country to set up a 'hostel' we can all live in--or at least use as our permanent address while we travel.

Re: [Marcus_B] Base Jumping Travel Insurance
As I mention in my previous post, if you are a resident of the USA. For some reason it and many other policies do not cover German citizens. We found this out trying to get coverage for another German jumper for an event.

Re: [TomAiello] Base Jumping Travel Insurance
Hey guys, Brian here - I dug into this a month ago and posted this. Have a read:

After reviewing the fine print of HCC's Atlas policy (at pg. 12, paragraph 27 of ‘Other Exclusions’ found here) BASE jumping is now expressly excluded.

I called HCC to have Brandi Peyton clarify (she's a sales rep for HCC who previously posted on the travel insurance thread). She's no longer with the company, but a supervisor named Ron confirmed that HCC no longer covers BASE related injuries at all. He said it became prohibitively expensive after receiving multiple six-figure claims from BASE jumpers in the last year alone. Ron can be reached at: (317) 262-2132 and is willing to answer jumpers' questions. Again, this pertains to any policies issued AFTER April 1, 2013.

He recommended trying http://www.insuremytrip.com, an online brokerage that apparently allows side-by-side comparisons of sports-related policies, but I haven't checked it out yet.

Re: [Dadsy] Base Jumping Travel Insurance
What's the maximum on your coverage? Is it $500,000?

I think pacificadvisors.net is the best option for foreigners visiting the USA at this point (if I remember right I was the one who pointed you at them).

$500k is going to be enough for most accidents in Idaho or Utah. My 1999 accident (low pull with DW) ran about $700k i Idaho, but that was with around 75 days of hospital time and some really serious neurosurgery.

Be aware that health care costs vary dramatically by state in the USA. $500k will cover most accidents in Idaho or Utah but won't even scratch the surface in high cost states like California. Just for my own interest, I priced my $700k accident (Idaho prices) in California (in 1999) and it would have run about $1.75 million there. I'm sure that 2013 prices are even higher.

Can I ask which insurance company you used, that provides BASE coverage in Europe for Europeans?
Thanks in advance

Re: Base Jumping Travel Insurance
Has anyone (U.S. resident) used WorldNomad? I'm looking for insurance to cover me for my trip to Italy but I can't find any reputable reviews. There seems to be one or the other, 5 star reviews that look like they were generated by the company or 1 star reviews by people who were not covered for an injury that they thought was covered (only to have fine print thrown in their face).

Or, are there are any other companies out there that someone has used?

Re: [tom-tom] Base Jumping Travel Insurance
I'm a US resident and bought a policy from WorldNomad a few months ago specifically for BASE jumping in Lebanon and Greece.

I sent an email twice (one for each location) specifically inquiring if I would be covered in a BASE jumping accident. I didn't mention anything about legality.

Both times the customer service reps got back to me quickly and replied in no uncertain terms that I would be covered for BASE jumping in the specified countries. I made sure to save those emails.

I would purchase a policy from them again. Reasonable cost and good customer service from my experience.

Edited to add: The particulars of the policy may have changed since then; I haven't looked at their site or read the fine print since my policy expired.

Below copied from the World Nomad web site....note that the "Explorer" policy specifically notes that it covers BASE jumping. The quote for a two-week policy for a U.S. resident was ~$91.00:

Exactly which adventures we will and won't cover varies on the plan and optional cover you choose, depending on your country of permanent residence.

Re: [grgmo7] Base Jumping Travel Insurance
Please keep in mind that even with the Explorer package that is advertised as covering BASE jumping the maximum amount of coverage you can get is USD$100,000. Its certainly better than nothing, and in some countries and some incidents it's probably more than enough, however there have been several accidents in the past few years where $100k was not even close to enough.
