magnetic pin flap pro vs con
hey all, after reading about pin locks on different containers and such, just wondering why we dont use magnets in the pin flaps to keep them closed as opposed to the "tuck' style? i know the older baser had magnets, and people bitched about them grabbing the A while climbing. i am looking for other reasons to not pursue a magnetic style pin cover? please tell me the reasons, i am curious, i am considering modifying my container to a magnetic flap. thanks Jeremy

Re: [roostnureye] magnetic pin flap pro vs con
I have jumped a BaseR off of Wanda, never had
any problem with the magnets affecting my climb.

I have heard people complaining about picking up
nails/screws with magnetic bridles on urban jumps.

My preference is magnets first, tuck tabs second,
velcro third, and snaps least out of all of them.

I even thought once about how it would be cool
to make a LOW only rig held closed by magnets.

I think we should go with pyrotechnically opened rigs. Sew the canopy inside a homogenous piece of 1000D Cordura and tape a strip of detcord down the center. It might require a small secondary charge on the pack tray to eject the canopy.

I have read about it too and always wonderd why they would put the magnet on the bridle.
In my world I would put a strong magnet on the rig and a "washer" or similar on the bridle.
Unless you have to PLF you won't pick up any nails., and if you do it's easier to find the magnet on the rig.

What about magnetic leg straps?

RE: magnet on the rig + "washer" on the bridle
Good idea... well for those who need bridle
management solutions, yes an IT joke Blush

RE: magnetic legstraps I assume joke.... um, ha ?

RE: Explosive Openings Wink

Well if you cut off those dangerous pin flap covers
you could simply replace your pins with firecrackers
but be sure to bring a lighter with you on the jump.

A rocket that tows the canopy to line stretch and triggers a ballistic spreader for the bottom skin would probably work better. Smile

Re: [TomAiello] magnetic pin flap pro vs con
I think we should just start out with a fully inflated canopy....

...oh wait, that's paragliding/speedflying.....

Didn't an episode of Stunk Junkies feature a rocket deployed BASE canopy? That was a cool show. Too bad we got it canceled Crazy

metal shavings get into the fabric. Better to have a ruined bridle than a container?

Not an issue with most people but I had to stop packing at work because of the magnet in my bridle.

You sure about that? Wink

Also, I don't think I would want to pack around metal shavings...

It might require a small secondary charge on the pack tray to eject the canopy.

Re: [jaysismyson] magnetic pin flap pro vs con
I've never had to deploy in my life. The canopy sees how bad my body position is and tries to bail on the whole jump, but I have it attached by strings and it reluctantly floats me safely to the ground.

Just "borrow" an air-bag off a passing car.

I recall the bridle magnet picking up a lot of metal fragments from the soil in Utah or Arizona.
