Dirtbagging at the perrine (5/13-17) and MOAB (5/17-5/23)
Hey guys and gals. I'm going on a climbing/jumping graduation trip as mentioned in the subject and thought I'd see if anyone wanted to share a few beers and jumps while I'm out there. We'll be camping the entire time.

It's just me and a friend at the perrine and then we meet up with a climbing group in Moab (I'm the only jumper). We're going to be climbing (castleton, ancient art, tombstone, etc) for 3-4 of the days in Moab and the rest of the time I want to split off and hike/jump so I can get more jumps in. It's my first time in Moab and so for the hiking/jumping days, it'd be nice to hook up with someone more experienced with the area. I have a few that I must do while I'm there if possible (*spot, ******* nest, etc). Will have a vehicle and I'll definitely be checking out the BASE shop.

Also, anyone know of somewhere to shower (paid is aight) at the perrine and Moab? I'm sure that some of the Moab campsites have it, but just checking. Now, before everyone quotes this last part and lol's let me say... I know that after several days I should just have a sweet water landing and then jump a 2nd rig naked to complete a healthy shower, but there will be lady-friends along on this trip Wink

Any other advice or beta (related to climbing/jumping/camping for perrine/Moab) is also appreciated.

Thanks for the advice and if I had the extra $$$, you can bet I'd be contacting them for my trip. If I did, nearly the entire reason would be just to meet him or Steph in person. I read Steph's book(s), follow much of their activity online, and think they are pretty incredible role models for BASE jumpers.

Unfortunately, it's a graduation trip, grad school not undergrad. As such, it's at a time in my life (jobs/moving/debt) where I have to conserve funds. It took some work and selling things just to make the trip happen. Maybe next time Tongue

There's a KOA campground in Jerome. Don't know if their showers are for guests only though.

There are paid showers at the hostel in Moab, I've climbed all the towers you have mentioned, castleton is tough. I would suggest the N. Chimney, its easiest to haul (if you don't plan on climbing 5.9 with your rig) and protect. I would wear your haul bag for the 3rd pitch and 4th (loose rock and meandering) climbing is a lot easier. Your call, just my advise. You will be on TR so no real worries unleass the leader screws up his belay. Bring a #5 for the 2nd pitch and you will be fine. Kor Inghals is very difficult for its grade and sandbagged to hell, IMHO

You can camp at the Fisher Towers and Castleton for free (~30min from main street), and a few spots off Potash if your lucky and or sneaky.

If you want to climb the tombstone bring a ledge and get good at A2+. Haven't done that one, but would be a tick list one day in my book next time I have a lot of free time and a partner.

If you want some more beta just PM me. I don't have the jump #s to help you but I do have the climbing experience and Moab beta

Thanks for all the info!

Weatherm, I sent ya a PM about some climbing stuff. If anyone else has some experience about climbs you can jump out there and some free time to spare advice, I can send you some details about what we were thinking about doing.

You can shower at the Flying J just north of the Perrine for $10. Nice, clean, private showers, with towels provided, and sometimes you can even get showers for free if you're lucky. Otherwise just stay at the Holiday Motel across from the hospital in Twin Falls for like $25/night.

I would highly recommend a guide while your out there. Especially for Castleton, it can be brutal especially for a first time visit. Desert ratings are sustained. My first time, I had to walk down with my head between my legs. Depends on how head up your leaders are.

I vouched next time I go to Castleton I'm going to jump. I'll hire a rope gun to fix my ropes . It will just make it more enjoyable. I've summited twice. My 3rd time will be fun. I've proved myself hah. My 2 cents.

AA isn't that bad at all, half day trip if your group is competent. You could be jumping by 11am swilling beers soon after

cheers!

The hospital has moved. The Holiday Motel is still there, though--it's just not across from the hospital anymore.

Mountain Project calls it a 5.9-. But at the risk of sandbagging someone, I would probably agree more with another guidebook that put it at 5.8 especially if you have the beta on the offwidth section. But that can easily feel like 5.10 if you are not current on sandstone and cracks.

I had a #4 as well as a #5 when I did it, and was glad to have both, although you could also just walk the #5 up. Definitely could hit the ledge in a fall if you are not a competent trad leader.

Sadly due to winds I left the rig at the bottom. But I'd definitely recommend the climb in its own right.

Edit: re-read mountain project, it says 5.8 too. 5.9- is the user consensus.

Edit again: also if you plan on rapping off the north side, or thinking you may have to if weather changes, bring double ropes for the rap. A single 60m will hang you just short on the last rap pitch, speaking from experience. Anyone done it with a single 70m?

That's what we'll be using for rapping so that'd be useful info =P We were planning on just rapping the way we came up if it's convenient (and has bolted anchors)

For top-roping pitches, would a 60m be fine for most stuff out there? We're going to be trad leading and setting up a top rope at each pitch for climbers without trad experience in our group (I get to haul 4-5 ropes, a rig, and extra trad gear Crazy). Anything dumb about that idea? For climbs with the non-trad climbers, we were planning on only doing climbs with bolted anchors (although we have enough trad gear to leave a trad anchor at each pitch probably). We have 2 small racks of gear for our area and borrowing 2 other racks from nice friends. In terms of the large pieces we have 2 #5's and 2 #6's at least...and 2 of the spring loaded tubes (like the Trango Big Bros) and obviously lots of smaller stuff.

ya don't need big-bro's for any of the towers you have planned. One #5 at best.
