Extreme Fear of Heights
Hi,

I know this is a basejumping site, but I wanted to get some advice off people who have a lot of experience skydiving.

I wanted to know if any of you had/have an extreme phobia of heights. I ask because I'm going to book a tandem jump, then a course if I can hack it.

I get full cold sweats, dizziness and tunnel vision... I really want to conquer my fear and I think this could be the way.

I guess I just need some encouragement before I hit book... Did any of you know of, or have such fear?

Sorry to be a naysayer, but don't expect for skydiving to cure your fear of heights. Whe you exit an aircraft you are high enough that the ground does not look threatening at all. By the time you are close enough to the ground that you can see the stuff that will really hurt if you hit it, you are under a parachute, which is not very scary.

Climbing on antenna towers will get you a lot more relaxed about heights but please don't go climbing around on them illegally. Maybe try rock climbing?

All true, but it probably took me 50 or so skydives before I was comfortable hanging from leg straps at 2000 feet. I still think about my fear of heights on every tower, every cliff, every bridge...not so much on buildings, but Maybe on some skydives (mainly on the ride up).

After I got really comfortable skydiving--at least I thought I was comfortable with it--I opened high and found that it made me paranoid as hell. It wasn't from the height, though. The canopy ride was long enough for me to have time to think of a bunch of irrational "what if" scenarios. Stuff like, what would happen if the stitches started breaking on my harness. After opening high enough times, I found long canopy rides pretty relaxing but the first few were scary.

The only thing scarier than heights is getting knocked the fuck out by my own dick.
