BASE Canopy questions
Quick bio.. 210 skydives. BASE FJC in October...I tried a search but did not get any results to these specific questions. I'm filing this in the dumb question category. Think I already know the answers but in this game thinking you know is not knowing in my opinion... I'm going to skydive my BASE canopy for the first time soon.
Question 1: If I buy integrity risers, any issues with hooking them up on that rig just facing forward...
Question 2: Could I just use my existing skydive risers? (current canopy is 170sq ft. BASE canopy is 266)
Question 3: Would the rental D-bag/pilot chute suffice ? Please help Crazy

Re: [PowderedToastMan] BASE Canopy questions
1. Hook them up like they would be hooked up on the BASE rig. Just be aware that in a high-speed malfunction situation that doesn't sit you up, you may have to clear the risers by hand after cutting away.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

I am a little concerned about your lack of gear knowledge. Hooking up a canopy is something that every skydiver should know how to do (even though many don't). BASE jumpers should be self-sufficient on the inspection and assembly elements of rigging.

The others have it about covered, but I'll add to the reinforcement of whats been said.

1. No, they cant be hooked up "forward". Integrity risers dont have the grommet in the riser for the white loop to pass through, so they are *likely* incompatible with standard sky 3-ring stuff in that configuration. You can brew your own cutaway system, but not if it's out of the realm of your ability. If you're going to use integrity risers on your sky rig, hook them up just as you would to a BASE rig, just be aware of what bm1 said above.

2. Yes, this is my preferred method.

3. Yes.

When I jump my BASE canopy, I use my standard sky rig. I hook it up as a tertiary canopy and I have sewn a spandex pouch on the side of the Dbag. I leave the plane with my back to the wind, holding the dbag like a football in front of me. Shortly after leaving, I extract the PC from the pouch to deploy. However, using my method, things can get real exciting if you begin to roll. I use a standard skydiving 28" ZP kill line PC.

Re: [PowderedToastMan] BASE Canopy questions
I agree with all that's been said. But ill add that hooking up your canopy to skydiving risers is probably overkill. The chances of getting a violently spinning mal resulting in a riser hang up on a BASE canopy is pretty rare. And if you do, and can't figure out how to either clear it or chop it safely then rethink your decision to jump single chute systems. Rental 220s fit that size BASE canopy nicely into the Dbag, especially if its all 111.
The biggest reason I wouldn't use sky risers, is that they are different lengths, and sky jumping a BASE canopy on its BASE risers will help you start to dial in the brake length from the DBS to the cascades, as well as toggle length; two measurements that will change if you use different length risers.

To question 1.
Issues: If you hook them up reversed...

a. to the canopy and the harness, The toggles/guide rings would be on the now front risers.
b. to the harness, the canopy would either be facing backwards with the toggles in front. or have half line twists on each side with the toggles in front.
Just remember to finish the equation in all that you do in BASE or other things where unfinished equations are undesirable.

Re: [base283] BASE Canopy questions
Thanks guys. I can just see everyone on the DZ like "hey man your 3 rings are backward" Unsure "What are you an asshole?" How many jumps do you have? " Explain yourself you little shit" LOL. It will be terrible ..Advise?

If you use the risers from the skydiving rig, it will take more rigging work (because you need to swap the canopy over) but will be a better system in the event of a cut away.

Also, if you have large rings on your BASE rig, it's possible they won't fit your skydiving rig (if it has small rings) so you may need to use the skydiving risers anyway.

It shouldn't be hard to find a rigger at the DZ who can make sure you've hooked it all up correctly.

Re: [TomAiello] BASE Canopy questions
can i add to that tom?

when you find said rigger who can check for you, you should go out of your way to throw him a couple bucks, buy him beer, etc etc., and have him SHOW you, how to take a canopy, swap it onto different links/risers, and teach you how to do a PROPER line continuity check.

this is assuming you dont know how to swap canopies and risers and stuff, if you do, good on you, those are neccessary skills in BASE

Re: [TransientCW] BASE Canopy questions
I appreciate the concern guys Smile I know how, just was sketchy about the opposite facing rings. I'm just going to use my normal sky risers so I don't have to get condemnation all day.

Re: [PowderedToastMan] BASE Canopy questions
It is not that surprising to see reverse risers on a skydiving rigs actually. For an example - "Atom" by Parachute de France has reverse riser setup.
I think it's never a good idea to mix gear though.

Re: [CNO] BASE Canopy questions
PdF fixed the reverse riser release issue by moving the large ring on the harness. Instead of sitting on the chest (where it would be trapped close in a belly to earth cut away), it's up on the shoulder (where it can release).

I know of at least one fatality that resulted from swapping PdF risers onto a non-PdF rig, causing a failure to release on cut away.

less worrying about people who dont know what theyre looking at giving you shit, more worrying about representing BASE canopy flight as closely as possible. jump the right risers and tell people to mind their own business

Hey Tom, Did you know that the reversal design solved a prob that never existed. I know that incident that you speak of. Also I applaud you for giving my student crap for mini risers.

Re: [PowderedToastMan] BASE Canopy questions
I rode all the way to altitude once before anybody ever noticed my risers. A guy sitting next to me asked if my risers were hooked up backwards, I paused, looked down at each shoulder, looked back at him with a confused look and replied "I don't know.... This isn't my gear... I borrowed it from somebody.... Does it look ok? What do you think?" Then I looked at my altimeter, shook my wrist and tapped on the face of the dial and held it up to my ear and asked him how high he thought we were. Door! He really had a concerned look on his face as I fumbled my way out the door...

What really got him was when I got up and turned around he saw all that fabric hanging out of the corners.

I think like less than 1% of people noticed my backwards risers, kinda scary, hunh?

Why scary? Reverse risers are not uncommon. No need for everybody to take notice and make fuzz when someone has them!

Whenever I jumped a rig with the fabric hanging out of the corners I left a non threaded pull up cord hanging from the pin flap to add to the sporty look. Only instructors ever noticed knew it was a joke and didn't think it funny.
