new V5 from Phoenix Fly
I got the chance to do my first jumps on my new V5 from Phoenix Fly this weekend at Brento.
I did between 150 and 200 jumps on my V4 so I can only compare it with that suit. Some of the most notable differences to the V4 are the much faster inflation. The armwings and the legwing are thicker and you feel the difference to the V4 in how fast they inflate and how rigid the wing feels. There is no booty sticking out, the whole bottom surface is very flat. On my first 2 jumps I tried to work to much in the suit and I was slipping around a bit. On my third jump I relaxed and just tried to adapt to the shape of the suit and it was much better. On my fourth jump I also tried to fly steeper and with more speed the suit is very stable. The glide was better after this 4 jumps than on my V4 and the speed was also good. I have to check my fly site to compare speed on my V4 and my V5.
I am very happy with this suit, I think it is another step up in performance compared to the V4. It is a suit for advanced pilots, not a suit for beginners or jumpers who want to take a shortcut and not do the necessary preparation. It will take me some more jumps to have the full bucket but I'm already happy now.
Nice new toy to start the 2013 season Smile

So, Mikki....did you make it to the bar..?

I usually have no problems to make it to the bar... my problem most of the times is finding the way out of the bar ;-)

OK.
After hard time at Brento and few jumps on my V5 i can write bit more about new suit which is coming out from Phoenix-fly factory.

I flew all the V - series suits and have around 500 jump with them.
With my last V4 i was jumping 2 years and i thought that you can't make perfect suite more perfect.

I was wrong ;-)

I thought it's gonna be few changes like:
- get rid of plastic ribs in the leg wing
- redesign leg wing which avoid flapping
and few minor changes...

As Michi mention it has faster start.
Lot faster. Inlets on the arm wings are bigger and redesign the way you can't close them.
You can try to push them with your finger and they will be open all the time.
No chance to close it.

I can take short starts with V4 but with V5 it's insane.
Jumped with other factory suits (bigger) and could start flying faster my V5.
But... i had good teachers and practise a lot.

As Michi wrote the wings are thicker and inflate faster and are more rigid.
But the shape is made for fast flying and drag remain the same to V4/ V3 as the leading edge is well thought.
You can feel it when you fly. The whole suite is pumped like hell.

It has different way of turning a bit. Easy to get used to it compering to V4 or V3.
It's like that because attachment point of the arming wing which on V4 was going to the heal now it's going to the toes.

With redesign bootie makes whole leg wing, bootie and the side of the arm wing one big surface.

Pulling is bit more challenging ;-)
Mainly because you can't collapse the wing and you have to go around it.
Nothing difficult and after few jumps you can get used to it.

Performance is better. Speed depends on the pilot... like most of the suite.

Again like Michi mention it's not suit for begginers.
If you really want to try it put some jumps on V3/V4 and best in smaller suit before.

In overall i thought it's small changes, but it's something new.
You can make perfect suit even more perfect ;-)

At the end -> It's the pilot not the suit who is flying ;-)

PS. I wait for Colugo from Matt to try it but didn't arrive :( Hope to check it in 3-4 weeks. Robi is not happy about it ;-)

Aren´t the Squirrel suits made in Vietnam?
Not that it´s a matter, but how do actually the workers get paid there?

The profit of most the Far East products is build on wage dumping in Far East and high prices for the end consumer over here.

But again, I don´t know anything about the company.

But I rather spend my money on products either made in the EU or US (like my Skydiving rigs, Canopies, etc.) if I can.

You mean plastic ribs?

No. There is no more plastic ribs in leg wing.

Martin,

from Squirrel's website:

"The facility is an excellent place to work, with a cleaner environment and higher relative compensation and benefits than most American factories."

I respect this view and I am assuming you're typing this from your european made computer? Tongue

one good thing about the V5 is that it even keeps the pilot safe when he or she forgets to do the chest strap :) oh wait I promised not to tell !!!Angelic
