Swiss train half fare card
Does anyone know if the half fare card works on the trains to/from lb and the mushroom. Trying to decide whether or not it's worth getting one for my trip.

Also does it work for the monthly cable car pass in the valley? And are those still 90chf?

Any other advice on the cheapest way to get around would be appreciated. Arriving solo in mid may and staying for a month, never been before and on a pretty tight budget.

Re: [nickfrey] Swiss train half fare card
I get the half price card when I fly in to Zurich or Geneve it cuts half off your train fare straight away saving like 80-100 bucks don't forget you need to return to the airport so really you get one way free that pays for it straight there

And then if I am correct when ya make it into the valley you buy a monthly pass for the area and you cant use the half price card (edited my memory is fucked Wink:)[/;)]
)
The monthly card will only take you to wengen I believe and thn you must pay for the extra 2 stops to klenerscheidegg (spelt wrong) and eiger glacier
But with half price card you cut of half of this fare as well and that's more saving

Monthly pass gets you up both sides of the valley to wengen and Murren

But if ya headed to eiger once you get to wengen you need to purchase a ticket to eiger glacier

If you need help mate contact the Swiss base association they will be stoked you are contacting the locals

Pay the valley fees and have fun and you won't have any issues

Hope that helps

Re: [MBA-PATTO] Swiss train half fare card
Thanks, that is exactly what I needed to know...

Looks like it's a no brainer.

Incase anyone is wondering, the half price card costs 120 for a month of half price rail travel. Zurich and geneva to LB are about 80 francs each way at full price.

A full year half price card can be had for 175, 150 if you get it with a debit card. Not sure if foreigners are eligible for the debit card thing though.

fairly certain the half-tax card is not honored for the month pass in LB.

still generally worth it though...

Yeah, sure you are right that it does not work for the valley access pass.

Re: [Rauk] Swiss train half fare card
I think the major points on the half fare card have been covered already on this thread but just to summarize :

- The half fare card makes you eligible for 50% discount in ALL standard trains nationwide in CH. So if you travel even a bit with trains it really is a no brainer.
- You can get the 1/2 fare card also as 2 or 3 year card where obviously the annual payment is smaller. I think the 3 year card is currently 400 chf.
- Also majority of the cable cars, private mountain trains etc offer some kind of discount with the 1/2 fare card (not necessarily 50% but for example 20-25%). For example from Wengen to Eigergletscher (the train ride up to the beginning of the hike to the famous fungus) is covered so you get 50% off. The same goes for the return obviously. I think we once counted that on one jump from the fungus you save around 20-30chf with the 1/2 fare card,
- A monthly ticket is a monthly ticket so no discount is available on that with the 1/2 fare card. However, you do get -50% from the 6 ride punch cards with your half fare card. So if you mainly jump the nose / stechelberg side, it might be most economical solution to buy the monthly pass only to that side (I think it is around 65chf) and take a 6 ride punch card up to wengen with your 1/2 card.
