Wireless wind meter for smartphones!
Found this project on kickstarter and I think it could be really useful! What do you think?

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vaavud/a-wireless-wind-meter-containing-no-electronics

I got excited and donated enough to get my hands on it early, yes im a gadget freak. But i think this product can make a difference..

At least i can remember many times in the past where i would have benefited form it.

Once did rock, paper scissors with a neanderthal of a friend to decide if it was 5 or 8 knots of wind.

Let's back this bitch and make it happen!

How often are you more worried about wind at the exit compared to wind at opening height? Tying a streamer to the cell phone and chucking it off a cliff might do more good in my honest opinion. But that's just me...I'm a hater.

Point taken!

But for me personally opening hight can be measured on the ground. But i like the low stuff. And i really dont like to throw garbage off the object unless i am certain i will find it after. Dont mean to hate your hating here bro.. But you are right. Maybe speedriding and paragliding would find higher value in this..

I just came across this and though it could be a valuable tool. At least worth mentioning.

If it were $1.99 on the App Store I'd buy it. ;)

I got excited when I saw the title, but it wasn't what I was thinking.

I'd love some type of wireless (be it wifi/pre-paid cell/ etc), battery powered mobile wind meter (preferably small with a long battery life). Mount it somewhere that no one would notice/care on a local A and just check your phone to know if it's a good night to go give it a shot.

It wouldn't be too hard to make one that you can txt for an update.

P.S. Obviously it'd need wind direction unlike those apps

That's an amazing idea. Just go on your iphone app and check the wind at any of your favorite objects.

Or just map out the whole fucking base cosmos and link it to the site.

They are already stating that the product is wireless so i will write them your idea and see what they think.

Ya, when I read the post I was thinking of a wind meter on the actually object at around flop height that you can look at via your iphone. They already have wireless wind meters obviously, my buddy has one on top of his shop right by an A farm.

**We need to make this happen for sureee**

Not sure how easy they are to set up and what the cost is. But what if we had a cheap wireless wind meter with a attachment solution similar to the gopro (with the double sided tape). If its cheap enough for people to set them up and leave them behind, we could build a pretty useful database/platform, combined with google earth (or similar map function) and a description and comments function.

If you can get it in different colors it might be possible to leave them on the outsides of buildings without it being detected so easily

Im just thinking we should work more with innovative companies like this. It could be in the interest of both parts.

I have invited the founder of this company to participate in this discussion and to get ideas, so feel free to bring forward your ideas of how this technology could contribute positively to our sport.

Anybody have any experience with these solar powered/wireless wind speed/direction stations? This one says it has a range of 150m. Could be pretty cool.

Had one like this at my local dropzone once. Depends a lot where you place the instruments doing the data collecting though. If it's not in the middle of landing zone (or where needed) then it's not much of a help. Had people checking the winds with handheld instruments and gut feelings on the windy days at the end of the day. Not worth the money in my opinion. Can get the temperature and humidity readings on a 3$ instruments too Tongue

That kickstarter project is about the dumbest thing I've seen in years. If you can't estimate how fast the winds are blowing around you, then perhaps you shouldn't be jumping.

For those who asked about a wireless solution to see the windspeeds in a LZ, I own this product:

We use it at Bridge Day and it's been tested to more than 1/2 mile line of sight. Works great.
