PC selection - Troll 305
I have a FJC booked for later this year and am about to order a few pilot chutes. I have spoken to few jumpers and have read all there is to read but there's a fair bit of conflicting info/opinions. I just want to hear as many opinions as I can before I form my own.
Anyone who's jumping larger canopies (I have a Troll 305 and weigh 92kg), what are your thoughts on PC sizing? Do you tend to use a larger PC than standard ie: A 38" rather than a 36" or a 48" rather than a 46"?
For those with the experience, is the 2" likely to make a substantial difference to opening height or center cell stripping?

Thanks.

For what it is worth... I weigh 78kg naked and jump a 265 and never use a PC smaller than 38 with it. Unless you plan to do slick jumps from really high walls (such as Kjerag for example) I really do not see a need for smaller PC. So I would go with 48 for HH SD, 42 for BOC SD and 38 for all slider up.

I jump a Troll 285 which is fairly large too. I have always used a 48 over a 46, a 38 over a 36 etc. just as you described. I also find I use my 48 for longer delays more than most people. No problems so far. Makes me feel good but most likely though it's not going to make a lick of difference on most jumps. And if you find a jump where a 48 or a 46 will be a critical difference then it's probably not worth jumping.

Re: [Fledgling] My PC collection
I own a pair of Trolls sized 285
and here is roughly what I use:
32" vented for terminal
38" vented for 700' and up
42" non-vented for 300' to 420'
42" vented for 350' to 650'
48" vented for for 300' to 400'
48" non-vented for 200' - 315'

I jump the exact same set-up. keep it simple. All my PC's are vented.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Any particular manufacturers you think are worth going through? Mainly after quality and lead times.

you don't really jump a 38" PC when you are doing a go'n'throw from 700ft, do ya ?

What I am saying is that height doesn't matter dick - it's the delay that should dictate the PC size. And you should know better ! :)

This is really going to confuse some beginners, and I can't imagine a scenario where a 42" will get tosses at 300'.

Your are right, for some reason I interpreted that wrong, I was thinking he said 36" for 300, when clearly I read 42" haha Blush carry on

Since we are all hating on this green mf I don't like 48 ventd PCs at all. Just don't see the point.

Re: [Fledgling] hating on this green mf
VID666 makes a good point,
of course the delay matters
more than the exit altitude.

If I was starting today then
I would probably only buy:
38" vented
42" vented
48" unvented

However, I stand my above choices.
They have worked for me and all of
my near death jumps were due to
PILOT ERROR during the jump and
never due to rigging, packing, or
gear configuration.

Lastly, why do you guys quote me
instead of just reply? You only add
extra green, 1's + 0's, and scroll...

Hi Maretus ,

I believe I read in a older post you were using a 46" instead of 48". Is there a particular reason you changed ?

No particular reason, it was time to replace my old 46´s and I ordered a 48 as a replacement. No reason really, would be happy to use a 46 as well on the same jumps. Maybe my reasoning is that on the 0-1s range there´s no harm from the extra 2 inches. But like said, would be happy to use 46´s as well.

Re: [underseaash] PC selection - Troll 305
I jump 305 troll and osp. For all go n throws ( meaning 0.5 s) HH i use 48. From 1 sec to 2 sec i use 46 or g'n't higher than 250'. Both unvented zp.
I've jumped 2-3 sec delays with both 38 and 42 vented. Havent noticed any difference.
For all SU jumps i use 38 except for terminals i use 36 small mesh vented zp. Works like a charm :)

But if i had to choose 3 pcs i'd go with 48, 42 and 38 unless the only SU jumps would be terminals then 36.

I'm 95kg.. I jump a Fox 315 for my Aussie canopy & a Troll 265 in Europe. For slider down im 42 for nearly everything on both canopies & 48 on go & throw.
Sub terminal slider up i run 42 on both, for terminal on the 315 I've had the best luck with a large mesh 38 (but be prepared for pretty firm openings on the really big stuff) while the troll seems to like a fine mesh 36.

My choice of PC lineup would be 48 for hand held, 42 for 2-7ish seconds, 38 for Lauterbrunnen, 36 for Norway.. have a play with those and see what works for you from there
