Re: [SQBrewski] Buying first BASE rig
If you're intending to do only terminal jumps, you don't really need a vented canopy.
My first choice in this situation would be an Ace from Consolidated Rigging because (a) it's the cheapest canopy on the market, (b) it was designed and tested as an unvented canopy (unlike most of the competitors), and (c) it's made by Performance Designs, which has extremely good quality control.
If you decide you want an ultralight canopy (which I wouldn't recommend for a first canopy, but all the cool kids are buying them so you may decide you have to have one), my first choice would be the Feather, from Asylum, for the excellent glide ratio and flare. My second choice would be the Flik UL, from Apex (for similar reasons). My third choice would be the Trango from Atair, which doesn't have the glide ratio or flare power of the other two, but is still a solid and field proven canopy.
You will also want a pin rig. In my opinion, if you are buying new, you ought to look at 2 pin rigs from major manufacturers because they will hold their resale value the best.
Where are you located? If you are in Europe, you will probably find that the Adrenalin containers are the easiest to get/cheapest after import duty.
If you are in North America, you probably want to look mostly at the US manufacturers, for cost reasons.
My personal preference in your situation would be the Helium, from Morpheus, because it is a "convertable" rig that can change profile to be adjusted for wingsuit flight (and also for much smaller canopies if you decide to switch to an ultralight later in your jumping career).
The other container I'd recommend you look at is the Apex Summit, which is similar in design to the Helium (and also a convertable) but at a much higher price point. If you are in Europe, the corresponding rig is the Adrenalin Hybrid 2.
If you are trying to save money, but still want to go with a new container, have a look at the Apex DP (their lower end pin rig), the Asylum Perigee Pro (my personal favorite all around pin rig) and the Morpheus Gargoyle (the lower end version of the Helium).
Here's a price comparison on the Helium, Perigee Pro, DP and Gargoyle that I did a couple weeks ago for a student of mine. I tried to select the same options from each manufacturer to get a good "apples to apples" comparison, except that the Helium is a higher end convertable container.

The good news is that if you are primarily looking at terminal jumps, you can pick up almost any secondhand pin rig and have something that is good enough to get you started, which can save you a lot of money.
I hope that helps.
In my opinion the best way to decide what you want is to take a good training course that lets you see/pack/jump various different systems, and get a bit more education about them, before you put down cash to buy one.
