A grim documentary from Russia
No need for knowledge of Russian. The video does show a grim counterpoint to all the flashy happy GoPro videos.

Re: [matoli] A grim documentary from Russia
video proof of why i refuse to take either my tube3 or my WS off of anything but a balloon with sufficient altitude, for at least as many jumps as it takes to know i can stick the exit no matter what.

some people approach this sport quicker and in different ways, but not me........i got nothin but time

+1 I'm exactly the same, I learnt my lesson the hard way though.

Thanks for posting this, it really hits home.

this should be posted as a sticky on the beginners forum

Re: [matoli] A grim documentary from Russia
95 percent of all scary base videos I have ever seen come out of Russia. Vid666, what is in the water over there!?!

Re: [matoli] A grim documentary from Russia
Wow.... Sobering indeed.

I know some disagree with availability online of video of this nature, with the mass of cleanly cut, music laced, happy videos sucking people in, this is a good reminder of the other side of the coin.

Personally, I've never agreed with it, however, I feel its about time for some balance. This shit is real.

Thoughts to all affected by the lost...

Would anyone have the inclination of producing a sub file for this? (Assuming a video file is available of this film?) - I would be interested in understanding what is being said. Thoughts on how?
Shortcut
Re: [matoli] A grim documentary from Russia
The film definately talks for itself...

But yeah, I would love to have some subs aswell... Just to know what they are saying..

Re: [matoli] A grim documentary from Russia
Thank you.

Needless to say, despite all the ethics about posting "stuff like this" (As if it were any secret to BASE) videos like this, needs to be available to at least the people who know how to find it.

It really puts things in perspective, and I'll never forget my feelings when I was watching the "carnage" footage. This is almost Disney compared to.
New jumpers need this side of the coin as well.
And I myself, are one of those.

That would be great if you could, appreciate the effort!

If possible, with a video file to download rather than YouTube, it would be very much appreciated.

Re: [ballonhans] A grim documentary from Russia
We view it as unethical to post videos like this. Do you suppose it's for the family? I feel like if I were to make a mistake, I'd want people to see it to learn from, even on youtube. Do you think these folks would prefer their footage to not be seen? If you went in, would you want your footage available?
Shortcut
Re: [Bealio] A grim documentary from Russia
That's a good question, and yes I would. In fact, I will make the arrangements for it right now, to be send to Tom Aiello.

But not on youtube. I would want it to be online for people who knew where to look. There's a lot of stuff on the internet not up in people's face, but, if you want to find it, you can.

I think we should contribute to that sort of "hidden warez of di interwebz".
I've read the BFL numerous times and yes, it really helps to learn from other peoples mistake. Add video to that, and the effect will be much more valuable. Sad but true.
Ofc, there's the family and friends that don't need to see these videos, but i hope and trust that we can keep it online and only in the community.
Maybe I'm naive, but some communityes can keep secrets, why shouldn't we be able to do that?

I think a lot of jumpers out there either don't realize these things can actually happen, or worse, they don't want to accept it.
And I know of a few who don't give a shit about bfl's and bj.com and only see our sport through the tube and dont "have" the time to study and prepare, like someone in here said was 90% of BASE. I couldn't agree more.
Maybe these guys would stop and think, if they had any idea how wrong shit really goes.

This really is a touchy subject, and I'm not even sure if this would be a good thing. Just discussing.

Re: [Bealio] A grim documentary from Russia
I would not mind if my footage was shown. I think this is a great reminder for anyone who jumps what we are doing and the consequences. It is a counter to all the awesome utube videos for those rushing into the sport. It is not all rainbows and chocolate cake. Think the valley is easy, think again !!

Its a publically available docmentary made for the general public, so nothing unethical.

I think the difference is the documentary aspect.

What we're uneasy with is the idea that BASE accidents will become entertainment for the masses. A documentary (or a showing with explanations) allays that fear.

The "Story of One BASEjumper". This is a prequel (Part1) to the one in the original post (Part2 starts with Anton recovering from an injury, which makes more sense if you've seen Part1). Just as powerful to watch, but definitely more beneficial if you can understand Russian. Many words of BASE wisdom.

I don't know how much interest people would have in this one (being not as grim as the first one if you don't understand the commentary) but if there is an interest - I can translate it (since Paul will probably have his hands full translating the other one) Smile

Superb documentary. Thank you for posting.

Edit to add: am I correct in thinking that the fatality which opens and closes the film was a memorial jump for one of the jumpers who was shown going in during the body of the documentary? That was the sense I got, but I don't speak Russian...

From the narration it doesn't sound like it was a memorial jump.

Here is the tranlation of the section that talks about that fatality.

At 23:03 Victor Il’in says:
“Anis was the first one to fly a wingsuit from the Forostky Kant exit. That first jump was successful and really beautiful. At that point no one knew that Anis will be the last one as well, to walk the “bridge to nowhere”.
“Why do you think Anis died?”
“Firstly, an incredibly powerful wind, 15-20 meters and that’s not an exaggeration. And lastly, all the other factors – there was some really heavy drinking going on till very late at night. I can tell you from my own experience, if you are drinking till 3am, especially port (which is quite heavy on the body), then at 8am you can walk and jump on reflexes but you can’t use your abilities to the fullest. Your coordination is disturbed, plus he was lighting a smoke canister, plus he was making a call on his sell phone, all of that simultaneously. He just wasn’t focused and died because of that. Out of the 20-25 people that were there, not even one was jumping. Even though many jumpers in that group were just as experienced, and on a level of craziness there were even crazier ones. But not a single person even thought of jumping, even though everyone was jumping that exit during couple of days prior. For some reason he was the only one that had decided to jump that morning.”

24:26 “He is all broken up, like a rag doll.”

Re: [matoli] A grim documentary from Russia
An excellent, excellent video, and one that I think is completely necessary, however I would hate for my wife or daughter to ever see it.
It really changes the BFL, from a "harmless" list of names and numbers to a very real situation with very real people.
I realize there is no difference in the end result, if you're dead, you lose, plain and simple, but the video does an excellent job of forcing the viewer to realize what is actually at stake every.time.you.jump.

Well, after 2 days of translating, 3 days of editing and a week of YouTube upload battle Mad, here it is:

http://youtu.be/1Nez_WKFQBc

The translation may sound rough and potentially grammatically incorrect, but that’s because I didn’t want to ‘add’ any ‘personal interpretation’ Smile

Also, please keep in mind, at times during the movie only parts of a footage were used, so the subtitles you’ll see are only parts of a dialogue and may not make much sense being out of context. I just figured I’ll translate even insignificant parts, so you don’t think you are missing out on some very important information Wink

Re: [matoli] A grim documentary from Russia
I am very charged in a negative morbid way from watching this movie. I feel that we need perspective on our choices so that we can make a more informed decision on what we are getting ourselves into.

The bridge to nowhere shows how the people that have choose in a .... let's call it "All in" manner the BASE lifestyle ... it showed how they finish their journey in this world. In a duct-tape bag, next to people marked for life by what they have seen ... for me it feels like a very dehumanizing experience. That's the right word, dehumanizing. Just by watching that I feel a strong rejection, I feel marked by what I have seen.

I would like to see the other end of that choice. How do people who have choose careers, family and a long safe life finish their journey in this world. Does anybody has any movies with that? I just want to see how I feel about that end and compare it with this one.

I am serious on this one. How the other end feels like?

Edit to add: Because the way I see it, you can die from extreme sports or from this and I don't think that most of the people who don't do extreme sports die in a friendly, humanly way.
