DBS vs. line overs
How does your DBS effectively lessen the possibility of a line over malfunction?

Re: [gauleyguide] DBS vs. line overs
I imagine the slack in the brake lines is a major contributor to line overs, so a taught line lowers the likely hood of one of them going over and trapping canopy fabric.

And I happen to agree.

Now, for an attempt to answer a very general question....

DBS are relative to the WL. In other words a canopy loaded extremely light vs one loaded quite high will have a very different slack in the steering lines, and thus a very different chance of having a lineover.

In all honesty, if one uses direct and/or indirect slider control or a tailgate, and is not a trash packer, line over should be very unlikely.

Of course if one trashpacks and uses no slider control (or TG), then something resembling the attached pic may occur (not a lineover) (not me, not a BASE jump, but a BASE canopy)

i refuse to believe DBS changes the chance of a lineover whatsoever. just my opinion though. Tongue

I think you are relatively right.
However one should still have their DBS tuned, you know, just in case they are staring at a wall right after opening :(

Why?

Re: [gauleyguide] DBS vs. line overs
because the adjustments are going to be minor like an inch I dont think a inch extra line is why its going over the canopy

I've never seen any evidence that changes in brake settings alter the incidence of line over malfunctions.

FWIW, I've tuned custom DBS on a fairly large number of canopies, and the usual adjustment is in the 3-5 inch range, so it's more than a couple of inches.

The only absolute way I could see it preventing line overs is if the brake attachment points are lower than the A line attachment points... In other words, if the parachute is packed to open in a stall. However, I could see that with shitty packing and no tailgate, longer lines MAY have a higher tendency to migrate around to the front of the canopy.

Me too.

Wanna stop a line over? Keep your tailpocket velcro fresh, use your primary stow (two wraps), and pack like Chucky P.

tuned DBS is good. but as far as the LO thing, the arguments above are why i don't think it makes a difference (thanks everyone). so far i have not had a line over on a base canopy or reserve, but have had a few skydiving. i'm not sure exactly what causes them, but i know what helps... like messy packing or poor line management, and probably something to do with extremely chaotic airflow during the deployment sequence.

I don't know if this picture has anything to do with anything but the GoPro on my helmet is facing backwards and the control lines are facing backwards as well. DON'T GRAB THE TOGGLES TO QUICKLY!

I guess my point is I set my DBS on this canopy and the lines are pretty taught. Although they are not in DBS on this jump. They still travel pretty good...

you are right. Your picture doesn't have anything to do with anything. Your lines are not taught, and it looks like the canopy is still on it's way to a complete linestretch.

I always thought that a proper DBS would help to prevent opening surge and the associated backlash in pressurization of the canopy that could cause the control lines to be flicked forward similar to the occurance of Tail Inversions.
