Range finder preference?
Hi All,
I've been reading through lots of posts regarding range finders and was wondering if anyone has bought one lately?
Many of the posts date back to 2003 but seem to have dwindled down to only a few in the past couple of years.. I''m just curious as to what peoples preferences are based on the newer models, if at all.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Look for small size, low price and ruggedness, in whatever combination works for you.

In terms of measurement accuracy and laser sensitivity/reflectiveness, I've not really seen much difference between the various modern offerings.

I bought the redfield 550. It works ok, and it's cheap.

I bought a Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 Laser Rangefinder from Amazon for $150, but it measures in yards. Murica! Hell yeah!

Without hijacking this post, I would like to add another question(s) to this topic as I am planing to buy one soon too.

How good are they for measuring cranes? Will the fact that the surface is not big and easy to point at, like a building wall, be a problem? Are there any buy and don't buy when it comes to this mater?

Thanks.

Re: [snhughes] Range finder preference?
I agree with the Redfield 550. When I got it, it was the highest rated low price range finder by people who like to shoot things. I pick the biggest thing I can find on a crane and use that.

Regarding cranes: take multiple measurements to see if you get consistent measurements. If so, plan from there and take a confirmational measurement looking down once on top.

I LOVE my Nikon Forestry 550. It does the pythagarous stuff for you, and mine has been rugged and reliable. But it is expensive.

Agree on every word in this post.
Especially about the nikon 550!

But regarding cranes, they usually have a big counterweight and/or a cabin that is very nice to shot at.
Sometimes you can stand right below the counterwweight and shot straight up.

But the pythagoras part of the 550 makes it so easy and fast that you can measure stuff while workers are around without them noticing

I saw the Redfield 550 on sale yesterday (through the end of the year) for $139. Let me see if I can find that email and I'll try to post the link.
