Hi my name is Will and I was wondering if it is piratical and safe to learn how to BASE jump in Florida. From my understanding (or lack there of) most people tend to learn on S's and in Florida there are only A's and a quarry I have heard about. I was hoping to start seriously perusing learning to BASE jump once I had around 150-200 skydives (at 100 right now). Is this a safe number of sky dives to learn BASE jumping in Florida? If not how many jumps would you consider safe to learn to BASE jumping in Florida? Or should I just fly my ass up to Idaho and learn there.

It can be done if you have a good mentor. But I would just join a course and go to the bridge first and bang out a bunch if jumps. I think 100 jumps is fine but most will disagree it depends on what you have been working on.

May I recommend Snake River BASE academy? And yes, I do think you should fly your ass up there. You will learn heaps on Tom's four day course and have a lot of fun at the same time.

I did 54 jumps in 3.5 weeks and that was taking it easy.

Yet you use the word "safe" three times.
Nothing is "piractical" about parachuting.

SKY jumping, driving, being overweight, etc.
are ALL dangerous activities you should avoid.

Most FL BASE students travel to the Magic Valley
located in Twin Falls, Idaho to try their bridge...

If they like BASE enough to risk death or worse
they continue jumping when they get back home.

i have read a bunch of his posts on Florida related issues and seeing he is a Florida local I was anticipating his comment.
yes upon review that is an extremely poor choice of words. the term was intended to be used as a relative term but nonetheless a poor choice. I am well aware of the risks involved with BASE jumping.

basejumping in florida is totally piratical, actually.

just not for beginners.
