Calicium for missing and broken bones...
Anyone have any recommendations on good sources of calcium? I need to grow me some bone... :-) Actually more like bones... I'm taking supplements, eating yogurt, and I am headed to 7-11 now to get me some milk (even though I don't like drinking milk)... And I hear broccoli is a good source as well... Anyway, just curious if out of all the injuries we all have had if any of your doctors have given you good recommendations for calcium intake and absorption (absorption is the most key part)...
Thanks! :-)

Take calcium pills, unless that's what you meant by supplements. Try http://www.GNC.com.

all the above is true.
you need a good intact of calcium (all previous rec's are fine), you need Vit D and sunlight. sunlight converts the vit D into its usable form. then you need stress on the bone (wolfes law). bone lays down calcium deposits in response to stress. That is why people in wheelchairs (even with high calcium/vit D and sunlight) have high risk of leg fx with a fall. So, excersice outside in sunlight, Vit D and calcium is the key.

Kale, bok choy and seaweed are all good sources for calcium, if you're getting burnt out on dairy.

Chew up and eat your chicken bones and egg shells.

Obviously it's hard to say what did and didn't improve the situation, but I had a ton of bone broth based stews in the time immediately after I got hurt (they had to remove my L2). It has tons of calcium, but it also has just about everything else that can help you rebuild. Especially when you add a ton of vegetables.

Regrowing bone is just as much a function of good sleep and general good health as it is calcium and exercise. Lay off the processed foods and get down to eating a wide variety of veggies. Make your body as healthy as possible by supplying it with everything it needs, so it can divert more of its resources towards repair.

Think of it as a big picture kind of thing, it's more complicated than just drinking a ton of milk.

Head to the butcher and get some of the bones that they would otherwise discard - this could be from anything, but beef is the obvious choice. Toss the bones in a pot, cover with water, add a splash of some sort of vinegar (more acidity helps leach more stuff from the bones), add some garlic and salt and boil overnight or so.

Strain it the next day and then add chopped veggies, potatoes, meat, spices and whatever else you might want.

Make a ton of it so it lasts all week and save money to pay your medical bills while you're at it.

Maybe we can add a "on the mend recipes" section...

You will all probably laugh at this, but I eat chicken bones. Buy organic chicken drumsticks and cut off all the meat while they are still raw. Take the bones and put them on a cookie sheet and throw them in the oven on the lowest setting for 4-5 hours to dry them out. Then grind em up in a coffee grinder and eat 1-2 tblspoons a day. The marrow has all the building blocks for your bones.
Also make sure you dont use any nicotine.

bone stimulators have minimal evidnence proving that they have any effect on bone growth. however, there is no evidence they cause harm, and if your insurance will cover it, its probably safer then eating chicken bones.

Calcium carbonate antacid tablets (like Tums, or generic equivalent) and some Vit D. You can buy more expensive calcium sources which claim better bioabilablity, but far cheaper to just consume a bit more the the cheap stuff to get the same amount absorbed out of your GI tract. (BTW, if you take Vit D supplements, you don't need the sunlight). As as someone else mentioned, exercise to put stress on the bones (but talk to your doc/PT about what you can handle: if your bones are fragile, just normal everyday activities may be enough for them right now).

No need to over do it: probably 3 times the daily recomended calcium intake spread out over the day is more than your body will be able to process. Ditto for the Vit D. Otherwise you'll just pee it all out.

I have a couple of extra things to add....

When making bone broth soup, crack the bones if possible. The marrow is what you are looking for. Slambo is correct.

The comment about skipping the milk is a good one.

If you are taking vitamin D make sure it is vitamin D3(cholecalciferol) and not D2.

Eat sesame seeds, collards, rhubarb, dried herbs, etc.
Tofu is supposed to be high in calcium but I would stay away from it if you are a male. Soy has been shown to inhibit testosterone production which is not good for older males especially.

Here is a great website for finding nutritional data on any food. Scroll down the list and see which things are high in calcium. Looks like the best thing for you would be double acting straight phosphate baking powder!

Actually, you don't just pee it all out, you can get vitamin D overdose but it takes a lot to get there over an extended period of time.

I just remembered a great place to get the max VitD. If you take shitake mushrooms and dry them gills up in the sunlight you are supercharging them with vitD. Seriously it's some incredible number that it increases to.

+1

When my ortho first met me after my skydiving accident, he said, and I quote, "Your heel is oatmeal. There might be enough big pieces left for me to reassemble it."

At my follow-up 8 weeks after surgery, he asked what I was going to do next. I said, "I'm going home to continue eating shitloads of yogurt."

"No, no child," he said, "Go home and bear weight on it. You need to stress it."

He wasn't kidding. I've since run marathons and 1/2 ironmans on my heel. No problems.

Calcium is part of the equation, for sure. But spend time doing ALL the recommended therapy. And add a little...

Good luck!

Is this injury from when you went through the window, or something different?

Awesome information everyone! Thank you!

I did a bunch of research online. But all of what I found was so biased... So that's why I posted here, to see what has worked for the type of injuries we encounter... So thanks again!

Hey KidWicked... I think you have me confused with another Seattle BASE jumper that went through a window (a few years ago). I have had a building strike before. But it wasn't through a window. And my building strike was many years ago (2002)... What I am posting for today is for a new injury...

The chicken bone thing was actually passed down from a 100 year old chinese man who used to do it daily and still went jogging...

Hey Dave858... Agreed... But unfortunately, I have talked to my doctor. And he really didn't give me any strong sound advice. So that's why I started doing my own research and also figured I would post on this forum, given I know a lot of us have been injured before. But please know that I am taking in the information and being careful. Thanks though...

Those Chinese know a few things....
I learned about it from my ex who was studying Traditional Chinese Medicine at the time. We were using the bone broth/marrow soup as a blood builder and immunity enhancer.
