Must stop drinking
I need to stop drinking in order to reach my life goal of BASE jumping. It's really hard for me. All of my road blocks stem from drinking (money, motivation, weight, time, marriage in jeopardy). I'm too proud to seek professional help so I was just wondering if any of you had any advise because I know your all a bunch of alcoholics.

not if you only want to make one jump Wally

Re: [OneJumpWally] Must stop drinking
You will have all the same problems, you'll just be blaming them on jumping instead of the drink

Re: [460] Must stop drinking
i cant help you,nor can i help myself.... i did a run through rehab about two years ago and worked the program, this was all because of my job..... that shit sucks ass, but it was just the tiny bit of reality and motivation i needed. was sober 6 months before i started drinking again but something had changed..... the difference is now i wont drink if i have work the next day, and ive been really good about it.... but if im off work, im getting hard to the paint like a maniac! the way i see it, theres worse habits and lifestyles that ive lived so booze is the lessest of all evils and im happy with that.

Read POST OFFICE by Charles Bukowski
but if im off work, im getting
hard to the paint like a maniac!

Is this some West Coast slang or phone auto-fill?
Because after years of bartending. bouncing, DJ,
and reading every novel by Bukowski I thought I
had heard all of the drinking verbage there was.

On topic, to the OP and others alike:

I went dry for 5 years - April 1st 1998 thru 2003.
Woke up hungover, knew I had a shit ton stuff
to do in the next couple months to graduate,
wanted to drop the cigarettes by the time I had
a Bachelor's degree so I took a break, woke up
every morning, ran 1 mile, then started my day.

Some of my Barfly friends were so shocked I
kept it up for years, all throughout Graduate
school, spent free time doing kung fu, yoga,
running, eating super healthy, meditating...

Then in 2002 I did my first tandem jump,
and you all know how our sister sport loves
their rules, especially the Beer rules so at
some point I started drinking the beer I
was forced to buy...

9 years later, I still do Not drink liquor and
only occasionally bum a cigarette or buy a
cigar, and with age my desire to get drunk
more than once a week is just not there.
Plus with beer my stomach usually gets
full before the brain goes to black.

Have you tried drugs? I know it is called
transferance, where you replace A with B
but perhaps do only pot for a month.
Taking a break from anything is good!

Re: [OneJumpWally] Must stop drinking
I'm not an alcoholic. I rarely drink. And I mean rarely. My job sucks, it's a dead end job. My wife left me. I don't have any friends, well, a couple. I sit here reading this and the first thing that came to my mind was a friend of mine was in Afghanistan a few years ago and ended up getting killed. He fought for his life. The (intel)reports say there were between 6 and 50 insurgents? Go figure?! He fought for his life. A broken jaw, a broken arm, shot in the chest, broken back, alone, out of ammo and he still took 6 of those bastards with him.

So, all I have to say about what you are asking is this...

After hearing about him fight so hard, life for me seems easy. You need to get real help and harden the fuck up. Are you a man? Then do something. The same advice I just gave you worked for me. Sometimes you need, not a slap in the face, but rather a punch in the balls.

Good luck.

I hear ya. I never had any problems till I went downrange. Came back a different person. Thx for the advise. What you did green sounds like the right approach. replace it with good addictions.. I think that addictive personality can help. Just need to redirect it...Crazy

Re: [OneJumpWally] Must stop drinking
Get over yourself. If you truly believe that you have to stop drinking, you either do or you don't. It really is that simple. Your problems are your own creation, accept responsibility and act accordingly. Why do you cry about drinking problems at a place like this?

Yea your right Seb. Because quitting hardcore drinking or crystal meth is almost as easy as quitting your mommies tit. All warm and cozy in your little Swedish cottage. What do you know about sacrifice. How hard are those Swedish streets? Anything like western Baghdad or Kabul ?

Go to some AA meetings and get a sponser. The standard advice is "30 meetings in 30 days".

Well, that's my advise to you, FWIW. Good luck.

Re: [OneJumpWally] Must stop drinking
Wrecking relationships, jobs, cars, finances, etc. in a short period of time helped me drink LESS. Started smoking a lot more pot though.

So how's that working out"? Less damaging than alcohol on relationships, career, etc.?

Glad it's working out for you. I don't drink or smoke but if I had to do one or the other, it would probably be 4:20 time.

To the OP: You didn't say what you were doing over there but if you were one of the good guys serving in the military, thankyou.

As for quitting drinking, I did it by myself but many attribute their success to getting help. However you choose to approach it, I wish success for you. I don't know about the BASE community but it still surprises me how many non-drinkers there are in the skydiving community. You will probably not be the only non-drinking jumper that you know. On the other hand, we live in an alcohol-fueled culture and there is no way to stay away from it. You need to really commit if you are going to stop.

Best of luck.

I hate that term 'drinker.' You know, to drink is to consume orally some type of fluid. That is kind of open ended. Do you call people who only drink water ... 'drinkers?'

Re: [OneJumpWally] Must stop drinking
Want to hear it hear it goes.... I was in AA when I started jumping. My girl friend now my wife of 12 years thought I was seeing another woman when I went to my meetings. I was not ready to share that yet with her. She got a laugh out of it when I told her. Well so any way I started jumping and buying the beer and doing this and that. Still drinking to this day and it is a bitch! Some days are ok but others I make an ass out of myself. Comes with the Drug.... On the other hand I was doing really well until some one accused me of growing some plants. NOT TRUE! That medicine worked well for my addiction to drinking but I am not allowed to have that anymore. I have heard that Ibogaine works well for all addictions I have not tried it yet but it in the works. You have to travel to South America to take Ibogaine and is not cheep but it has a high rate of success.

Be well friend

Peace,

Hey buddy, you and I know those are only allegations and they have nothing to back those allegations!

Ibogaine works for stopping the cravings and withdrawal but if you don't do something to change your situation and mindset then you will fall right back into the addiction. What's needed, in addition to Ibogaine, is therapy to get to the root of the reason for the need to drink in the first place or for any other addiction and also a change in situation. If you go back to your normal routine and have the same stimuli, chances are high you will go right back to your addiction. Ibogaine will momentarily break the cycle and give you the opportunity to become clean. The opportunity is there but what you do with that opportunity is what determines if you can free yourself from the addiction. You won't break the habit without wrestling with the inner demons that drive us to our addictions.
But as you know.... we seem to always have addictions to SOMETHING, so choose the ones that are least taxing on our systems.Tongue Take small steps to replace one addiction with a 'better' one.
Right now I am fostering an addiction to kale chips. I made some awesome ones yesterday. I'll give you the recipe you will get addicted to them!

You do not have to go to South America for Ibogaine. It is not illegal in Canada..yet. There was a therapy place in B.C. (see link) but sadly, it has closed. That being said, it can be acquired here.
