Hi Base Jumpers,

My name is Megan and I am a business student at Wake Forest University. My consumer behavior class is studying extreme behaviors. My team is conducting interviews of people like you.. base jumpers, free climbers, extreme skiers and boarders, etc. Basically anything that is super dangerous. We would love to find out what it is that deep down drives you to do what you do!! Please let me know if you would be up for talking to us about your extreme sport and what it is you get out of it.

sure Ill bite....being a jumper that has gone through a very serious injury recently and still have the drive to do it I sure I could add a couple of interesting tid bits to your study....

are you seeing a medical professional? seriously. i think you need serious psychological help.

i've seen someone with very similar symptoms as you have been displaying say he was fine and unfortunately he had his own family, which he then came home and murdered them all and then himself randomly one day.

one of my colleagues at work is off for several weeks. She has just had a severe injury involving broken pelvis. She did this during ayoga session. Is yoga an extreme sport ?

Extreme? Not sure if I know anyone that is extreme. Me and my friends on the forum are all quite normal.
Maybe you can find a serial murderer forum for finding extreme peeps. Wait, I do know of one guy that was extreme. A Tennessee Redneck with the nikname of "Truckstop." He could lift the rear wheels of your pick-truck by hand enough where you couldnt get any traction and therefore stopped your truck. I think he also punched a bull with a knockout blow.

We see things from a different perspective. Just as everyone else does. We are everyday people. You meet us, you walk by us, you speak with us. You may even be related to one of us. "WE" do not agree on anything or everything. Including BASE. We have value systems that are dramatically different and remarkably similar. There is no one "deep drive"to what we do. Is there a common deep drive in the business students at Wake?, oh wait you want to make money, probably a lot of it, which is okay.

I don't think anyone here finds themselfs extreme or crazy.
We have different backgrounds, and that means what you find extreme is not the same as what I find extreme.

For example, every day I get overtaken by cars driving at 100 mph+.
THAT is crazy! In my opinion.
Relying on his car, his tires, that his mechanic did his job, other cars on the road, roadsurface. All this has to work for it to be safe.
If one of those components fail he/she does not only risk their own lives but others too.
The person driving the car might think jumping out of airplanes/cliffs is crazy.
It's all about where you come from.

Some people drive in the woods in excess of 100 mph and call it a sport, Rally.
Some crazy fucks even stand next to this dirt road trying to take pictures of the other crazy fuck driving past him with just a few feet in between them.


We have different ideas of what is extreme.

The number of young women getting
cervical cancer from exposure to HPV
due to lots of unprotected sex seems
way more dangerous behavior to me.

yea...Im a base jumper....mabey not a good one or a safe one....but im a base jumper....get used to it.

Geez people.. I am not trying to sell your souls or anything. I in no way think you all are crazy nor was it my intent to insult anyone. You all are clearly normal people and normal people have different interests from each other. Like some of your said, we all have different perspectives on what is dangerous and we want to know what your perspective is on base jumping because you have done it. We have not, but that does not mean we would not give it a try if you made it sounds awesome enough.

Base jumping, or free climbing or anything else like it is just one of those hobbies that people can have that my group thinks is really cool. We just want to understand why you like it and what you get out of it, in the same way that we would approach a painter or a soccer player or anyone else and ask what they like about their hobby and what they get out of it.

Our interview is not being publicized in any way. We are not looking to make money, It is for a class project that we would present to our class of 20 students and you can completely anonymous.

First of all you say you are a business student at a University and you are doing a thesis / study on "consumer behavior". What kind of consumer behavior you want to study in the context of BASE jumping? Consuming what? Given the fact that you just mentioned of being a business student, you should maybe not be that surprised that people think that you are after money with this study. Certainly good to hear that pure academic interest is the driver behind this.

Also as an advice (I have a BSc and studied also statistics), maybe you want to check from your professor that what does he/she feel about basing your academic study on an interview conducted on a population of completely anonymous people from internet that you have never met in real life and have no way to validate anything they actually say... I mean if you get let´s say 50 (completely anonymous) answers through this board to your interview there is a high probability that the relevance of those answers to real life is about as high if you just generated your data with a random generator.

Whats your BASE number?
I would suggest that you lay off on the PAs or at least keep light hearted. Everyone on this forum is as likely to rescue you as you to rescue them. I do see an issue with you. I could be wrong, sorry if am. Identity crisis maybe. You are a BASE jumper according to your post. I am a person who partakes in the sport. I can do many other brilliant things. Play hackysack with high level guys and girlz, Play foosball with the very high level comp guys. I can create anything you want with sewing machines or repair any damage on your gear. I flick a Rubik's cube in under a minute. I was a collaborator on the Redbull Stratos Project blah blah blah. But I am a person 1st. What I do does not define who I am.
If I labeled myself as a BASE jumper (Oh yeah, Capitalize it) then it is a limiter. If I say "hey, My name is tracy" It opens a lot more doors.

thanks for the thought...I have no base number...One of the reasons I dig base so much is because you dont have to fill out paper work and such....I lack a nite building jump....I might get my numbers when I have all objects, nite and day however I would not bet on it.

Tracy, I like where you are going and I agree with what you were saying up until you say you are a 'person'. This is a 'limiter' as well, or to be be more accurate a definer in legal terminology.

Who are you? It's a tough question. As you have said you aren't the label of whatever you may do such as a BASE jumper, and also we have names but they are not who we are either, it's just one title of many that we sometimes may answer to, such as tracy, BASE 283, son, dad, jerk, the dog calls you 'woof', etc. You were right when you said your name was tracy instead of I am Tracy. Who are we then? Who am I? The body? No, because I say I have a body not I am a body. How about the mind? Is that who I am? Again, I say no because I say I have a mind. Who am I, then? Maybe something like 'I am the consciousness controlling this flesh and blood body'. Or I guess all that you really need to say is "I am that I am", right? That's about as close to a definition of who I am that I can come up with without limiting it too much!
Normally, I just answer to my regular first name given to me by my parents to keep it less technical in everyday interactions

3) To the OP, BASE Jumping is a lot of fun, it's exhilirating and each time you jump it makes you feel like you just caught the winning catch of the super bowl in double over time. Not that I know what that really feels like, but from all the physiological studies I've read*, apparently it's pretty close. Plus I'm starter today, and actually MORE risk-adverse (and risk management savvy) than had I never jumped.

I am in 100% agreement with you on this. I was responding to Nicholas1990 and had to tone it down to a more understandable level for his challenges. I wish him the best and am trying to give him some guidance.
