Is the any other reason apart from saving money (i'm guessing that you got a sweet deal on the rig) to go for a 10+ year old desing as your first rig? I would highly recommend to go for a newer (vented) canopy as your first rig, if you can afford it. I would still buy a Mojo as a terminal canopy if I got a really sweet deal on it. But for any use where you are potentially opening close to a fixed object, I would highly recommend a newer (vented) design which far outperforms the Mojo in this environment.

Mainly cuz I'm broke lol 1000$ bucks was all I had to spend for the moment and a new vented canopy alone is 2000+ lol

lol, bitch please. I hope you remind the 1000 bucks "saved" when you are paying off your ICU bill after the Mojo collapsed on first bounce on that cliff strike. lol for real.

Seriously, "saving" money on equipment in BASE is hardly a good idea... You can easily get a modern 2nd hand rig for 2000bucks and if the 1000 bucks in the middle is a showstopper for you, I would consider another sport.

Just my thoughts.

So you think I should pass on the rig? Hold off for newer technology?

I´m not saying what you should or should not do. This is base jumping and you alone should decide what you should do or shouldn´t do.

What I am saying that my recommendation for gear would not be 10+ year old design as I feel that there are newer designs available which are far superior to the Mojo. Think about it yourself, what is more important for you? Feeling good on the exit as you know you have the latest technology on your back or getting a cheap rig? For me I like to think that in a sport where I rely my life on a single parachute I want to get the (what I think) is the best parachute out there. But your mileage may vary of course.

I think that rig sounds fine as a starter rig.

I wouldn't recommend jumping any solid, slider down objects on it, though.

If you want the rig to hold you for a long time, I'd look for a canopy with bottom skin inlets.

If you're just looking for a start rig for relatively safe-ish beginner objects, I think it sounds like a good deal.

edit to add: It's also possible to have bottom skin inlets added to your Mojo at some later date, when you have the money to do it.

Re: [maretus] New Introduction GTA Jumper
I've got over a thousand jumps on unvented canopies, including over 500 on Mojo's. Nothing wrong with those canopies.

We obviously have different views on starting base. I agree that if the op is only planning to jump from the Perrine bridge or the huge terminal E in sothwestern Norway the Mojo will do just fine. But for me starting base also includes jumping those "solid slider down objects" and I think once he decides to go for those, it is good that he has the same canopy he was jumping from Perrine multiple times so that he already knows how it works. Not to mention the money factor that buying a 1000buck kit for your first 20-30 jumps is hardly an economical choice if tou then need to fork up the cash for another kit to advance in his career for other objects as well.

And Lonnie, I too have jumped a lot with nonvented canopies in the beginning. The worked as they were all we had. If I would have the choice we have now, would I still jump the old non vented Troll again on that environment? Most likely not, I would go for the vented one for sure. All personal choices though!

I believe the beginner objects in his area are mostly antennas, which can usually be done with a helpful tailwind.

I'd never advise a beginner to start in with solid, slider down objects. In my opinion, those jumps require a major step in both commitment and preparation. I definitely think that jumpers take them far too lightly, which is probably why there were so many cliff strikes in Moab this year.

"Well, I've jumped the bridge 30 times, so now I'm ready to go to Moab" is a very dangerous mindset that has hurt lots of people. Proper preparation can reduce, but never eliminate, those risks.

Re: [TomAiello] New Introduction GTA Jumper
Not to mention a lot of the cliffs jumped by lesser experienced people are not the "safest" ones.

I was/am a new jumper but when I did my first trip to Moab I already had a couple cliffs (not nearly as safe as tombstone) and around 50 jumps. I wish I had some A experience because I find it more forgiving than most cliffs in my area. However a few running exits off the top platform at the bridge is an awesome prep for getting away from a cliff. Moab is no joke winds are weird and you need to be COMMiTTED and conscious on every jump. Stick to the overhung and smooth cliffs that are plentiful in that area and learn how to jump safely in a big group without getting in over your head. Always have an out. Jump smart and take this all with a grain of salt since there are much more knowledgeable people out there.

A lot of good information in here, Toms right most of the stuff around here are Cranes/Antennas occasional buildings .. Not yet ready for anything Solid and low .. My Goal (when ready mind you) is to take it to Norway and Switzerland next year .. I have this winter and spring to train for it.. Tracking, Jumping my Canopy at my local DZ .. Although in the meantime I am looking to do some of the antennas and Crane/ +600ft buildings around here .. I appreciate all the input here and suggestions ..

And when you practice with your vented canopy in 16 mile per hour winds at the DZ don't be surprised when it's hard to collapse it with a toggle on landing. Blush

Not going to get into the whole vented/ unvented arguement, but as far as containers go, the Odyssey FX is still the TITS as far as pin rigs go! I fucking love them more than any other container out there. With a little easy mod, you can make it bottomless if thats what makes things awesome. I love the FX, it is rad!
