Nearly 100% increase in pack volume? Were you, by chance, moving with immense celerity while trying to pack the canopy, or was your relationship to the spacetime continuum fairly normal throughout the packjob?

God your post reminded me of something

BFL#5
Pauli, along with several other jumpers, had been jumping the day prior and landing into very deep snow. The jumpers shook the dry snow out of the canopies prior to packing, but evidently Pauli didn't remove it all. What's left melts inside the packed rig while it sat in a warm room. The jumpers deposit the rigs into the trunk of an old Saab and drive to Stockholm. The temperatures are well below freezing. On deployment Pauli's canopy went to line stretch but is basically a solid block of ice that never inflates

Re: [MBA-PATTO] Cold canopy pack volume
well, I skydive in Norway... haha.. yes, during the winter. Canopies get a lot more slippery when they freeze, especially if there has been any snow at all on them. They also seem to hold air better. Almost every jump a rubber band breaks. Also your hands get really cold when packing unless you wear gloves, that doesn't make it easier either.

especially the F111 canopies which are super easy to pack inside when warm get as difficult to pack as a 0P canopy when it's freezing. Make sure the gear doesn't get warm then freeze again, and dry it really well when you get back. Snow gets in the line fibres and in the seams of the canopy, it's like desert sand.

Re: [nakeddave] Cold canopy pack volume
Packing volume is inversely related to humidity, and as the temperature drops, the air's ability to hold moisture drops. So it's not actually the cold that increases the pack volume, but the lower absolute humidity...

I was thinking about this story the whole time I was packing, thinking how stupid a mistake like that was, but something that could just as easily go overlooked too.

Luckily mine had no extra H2O to freeze it together.
