Cool video, but it looked like the premise behind it was to show BASE jumping in a good light? Correct me if I am wrong on this, but it was an illegal jump, while in traffic, where people had no idea what was going on? Seems pretty reckless to me and what perfectly describes BASE as bad in a public eye. Not to say that reckless things are bad and not fun :), but just don't post them BACK into the public eye to be judged. Stunt N. any remarkable feat performed chiefly to attract attention:
I think stunt has a terrible connotation for the public viewing BASE jumping and thus this video hinders a possible forward momentum towards the opening of places like Yosemite. The word stunt is littered throughout the video and description/news feed. This is the complete opposite of anything intrinsic value, man.

At first watch i thought cool jump! then read the replies and realized the dude burnt the site. very uncool. As someone who likes to find new interesting vids on the net how can we prevent accidently promoting this sort of stuff? I guess there is a lesson for video sharing here as well...

Hey everyone, I just wanted to reply to some of these concerns. First, this object gets more heat from people committing suicide than any B.A.S.E jumper could possibly give. If you are local you can google search "man jumps off bridge (and the city)" and you'll see what I mean.
I have no control over what media sources decide to put out and I definitely did not approach them with my video. "Releasing" means that it was posted in public. They took it from there and added the whole "stunt" "daredevil" spin which is actually the opposite of the message I was trying to send.
My intention was not get attention, but rather to put a more human face on B.A.S.E jumping which I believe will ultimately start to open doors for the community.
I understand if anyone disagrees and you're certainly entitled to your opinions. However, and I'm talking to Jewbag, no matter what you think it is unacceptable to send me messages hoping that I die jumping or reveling in the fact that friends of mine have injured themselves. That kind of insensitivity has no place in our sport or our community.

Hey Matt,
I'm sure you did this with all the best interest of the sport and community in mind but maybe this episode teaches to you a thing or two about "releasing" footage? Regardless of your intention, very rately anything good comes out about posting footage to public. Like you rightfully said, you have no control over the media and the media are generally just cunts. They do not care about your intentions or your thoughts. They will add any kind of shit into their articles and make you like like a complete douche if it only boosts up their sales. Just like it seems that has happened here as the article and the vid is one the most gayest things I've seen in the close to 10years in the sport and portrays you as a complete douchebag where as based on your post you are just another heads up jumper who likes to have fun.
Just my thoughts.

"In other news tonight - in a dangerous BASE jumping stunt gone very wrong, BASE jumper Matt Blank was killed when he fell trying to climb up the open rear end of a U-Haul truck while it was driving along the ----- freeway. Blank was killed instantly when he was struck by the vehicle following behind the U-Haul truck. No statement from the family driving that vehicle, as they are reportedly in shock and the children are undergoing counseling.
Apparently, Blank was trying to perform a stunt BASE jump off the nearby ------ Bridge. CHP are investigating."
We forget that our actions affect more than the BASE jumping community. This jump could have ended very differently.
As for the issue of burning the object: as you pointed out in your PM Matt, yes, this could be any number of spans. However, once local media vultures get their dirty talons on it, they'll quickly identify it, and burn the shit out of it.

This bridge was on a TV show with Jimmy Tyler back in the early 1980s. The show was called That's Incredible. Jimmy jumped from the top of a moving truck, which inspired the train jumps that were done a couple years later by Phil Smith (BASE 1), Kevin Vennell (BASE 58), Andy Smith (BASE 9), and the Harrison twins (BASE 36 & 38). Jimmy was BASE's first Yosemite fatality.

Actually Matt, this couldn't be any number of spans. The trail below is heavily hiked. As well, it is a path for illegal immigrants coming into the US. I knew what bridge it was from every angle immediately no matter what scene it was in the video. A couple of friends who saw the video who hike there and had driven me a couple of times emailed and asked if that was our "S".
No one is thinking or talking about the suicides that happened off of the bridge. They are talking about the one ass hat who jumped off a moving truck and that made the news. Great fucking work buddy. 9 years of jumping that thing and I have never seen it on the news. If I get busted now cause you drew even more heat to it, I will be less than amused and you and I will have some words at that point. Use your fucking head and think about others instead of your own ego stroking needs.

Ha, OMG, what a POS. I just watched it again..painfully. What is classic is that it is still up on his vimeo, youtube and facebook page!! Even after all this controversy, what baffles my mind is that this was obviously done over several takes.. not only does he open the sliding door of the uhall in front of traffic, then slips on his rig cause he was too cool to be all prepped up, he clmbs to the top with leg straps loose on the outside of his skinny jeans.. but in the final jump sequence, he jumps with the leg straps tucked inside said skinny jeans. No helmet, no pads, just a cavalier "look at me" attitude. How f'ing rad!! I have never seen anything like it. Congrats bro.. I think you made it!!

what's the penalty for getting caught - like $100? it's California, where rules seem to be much lighter than the rest of the U.S.? no seriously, what's the possible penalty for just jumping some bridge in Cali? Use of a bridge for recreational flight? There's no walking on the bridge charge because he rode the top of a vehicle. It seems more that the driver might get charged for something weird.

Regardless of the bust cost, people are pissed. It doesn't matter the intention. The old school base ethic of jumping for oneself and respecting the other jumpers is the issue with this. Ok so many people post videos on youtube and such. Its fun watching any of the videos. However, new jumpers to long time jumpers enjoy this site and all of their respect was thrown out. The best part of this sport is the brotherhood that is formed to discard age as a discrimination or old school vs new school. Please respect the community and the foundations that built this brotherhood...aka the ethics.

It doesn't matter if you gave it to the media or not, it is very obvious that this was a jump done to gain the attention of non jumpers out there. You posted it PUBLICLY. An illegal jump posted PUBLICLY on youtube. I didn't even need to watch the video to know the object, I knew which one it was just by looking at the screenshot with the article.
You are a selfish egotistical fuck who cares about no other jumpers' well being just as long as you are out there getting attention. You are no better than Kim fucking Kardashian as far as I'm concerned.
People like you do not belong in the sport. I strongly suggest you take a moment to think about what you're doing and to learn a bit about base ethics from your mentor (if you have one and he even has any himself).
I love this span and have jumped it numerous times. If I get busted jumping this then i will save a kick to the balls especially for you.
