TCW - Beginning
Greetings

If you are reading this thread it is because I am interested in beginning BASE Jumping. I understand the risks and the quote that keeps me going is "Get busy living or get busy dying." - From Shawshank Redemption. Currently(I am ready for hate) I am 16 years old and I am 6 foot 5 inches tall and weigh about 250ish(I am a little big and have started a diet and exercise to loose some pounds.) Can I have some tips, advice and what type of rig I should look in too? I plan on buying from http://www.apexbase.com/ due to good reputation and reviews from people.

Canopy: FLiK or FOX
Container: Dual Pin or Velcro

And it would be nice if someone could help me with this information and explain a little bit to help me learn *please note I am not about to buy stuff and then go jump off a building, I simply am asking for information, advice for when the time comes.* (:

Also what other kind of gear do you need, I know you need a Pilot Chute, what would be the best size? I need my parachute out and opening as soon as possible so I was thinking the biggest size from Apex(52") and also what else would you need to base jump?

Thanks in advance!

Post the video of your first AFF jump instead.
There will most likely be someone you can hire to video your skydive.

I'll go and buy some popcorn now

That's interesting logic. Why do you think they make smaller pilot chutes?

Le't pretend you have a younger sibling
which you love and who looks up to you.
Would you teach them how to do hard
drugs at a ridiculously young age?!?

Re: [TCW] TCW - Beginning
You have to learn how to walk, before you try to Run the Olympic 100m sprint! Don't just come on here talking like you know what your on about, and thinking that because you have memorized the names of the gear, that that means you have an understanding of it and the pursuit of base jumping. You haven't even done a skydive yet, so why do you think you can base jump????? I love it when i tell people I base jump and they say "oh yeah that's something i want try one day" hahaha its that easy! you just go try it hahaha

So you don't want to answer my question? Shame.

It might have done you good to think for 2 seconds about how very fucking little you know about this extremely dangerous and technical sport.

The most impoertant thing with a BASE canopy is the color of the Ribs - they must be blue or it won't open - no matter what size pilot chute you use. Wink

Hey I am just a new skydiver and just got my A license. You got be 240 or under just to get started. Everyone is fucking with you because you could of answered all your questions just reading on this site. Tie dyed container sounds like totally gayism but what do I know?

Re: [TCW] TCW - Beginning
You've pretty much made yourself a target because you are a long way from being ready to BASE jump in a sane way and reading your post it's easy to get the idea that you are getting ahead of yourself. Something in your post strikes a chord with me for some reason, though, so here goes.

Sounds gay as hell to say this, but it is the most sound advice anyone can give you. Take baby steps.

It's GREAT that you are doing some analysis on it. It will help you greatly if you think about things in the sequence they need to happen, though.

This is roughly what needs to happen for you to prepare for BASE.

1. Learn to skydive. Most places will not teach you until you are at least 18 and have a pile of money to spend on training and gear. Don't even think about skipping this step. Yes, it has been done, but the people who have done will be the first to tell you how completely retarded it is.

2. Now that you know something about parachutes and how they are normally used, you will have some level of appreciation for just how hard BASE jumping pushes the envelope on what parachutes can be expected to do reliably. Reconsider whether you really want to BASE jump. Skydiving *is* a shit ton of fun. There is no shame at all in sticking with it.

3. If you decide to go for it, *now* is the time to start thinking in more specific terms about what kind of gear to get. The technology will probably change between now and the time you are ready, so no sense in putting a whole lot of thought into gear selection at this point.

4. Get some training.

5. Now is the time to buy gear if you decide to pursue BASE jumping.

6. Do it as safely and sanely as you can. BASE is a dumbass thing to do, but some ways of doing it are a lot worse than others.

I hope this helps.

And PLEASE don't make the mistake of thinking that if you are not doing *something* (like buying gear) to get yourself closer to your goal of BASE jumping, that you are not making progress.

Take a hard look at the BASE fatality list. Look at things like the number of jumps they had, how long they had been in the sport, how old they were, the year it happened (gives a clue on how advanced the sport was at the time), and what they were doing when the accident happened.

Now take a look at the people who have been doing it for years and are still around. Some are alive because of pure dumb luck or because they are stupid or crazy, but extremely tough. Others have survived a long time because they are smart and have solid judgement.

Find the smart ones and learn from them. Before you do, though, read everything you can find about it.

Lots of extra points if you can do it without saying anything to your family or friends. That will show that you are probably not doing it to impress anyone. It's important to do it for the right reasons.

Going back to step 1, start looking into skydiving.

One more thing. Remember that the youtube videos don't show the whole story--they usually only show the cool stuff.

Best of luck.

Walt
