DYI Tracking Pants
I've been looking around for a decent pair of pants that I could convert into some tracking pants with minimal modifications.

I found these which look almost perfect!
http://www.columbia.com/...62_S,default,pd.html

The way the pockets are done, you'd need to cut the pocket out and undo the zipper. Now, the cool thing is, if you keep the zipper on there you could probably just zip them up when doing a normal jump.
Also has the internal adjustable leg gaiter, and adjustable waist.

The only real thing you'd have to modify is to add an extra vent or two somewhere down the leg for faster inflation.

Just thought I'd share.

Any reason why you prefer to make your own over the available gear??

DYI=do yourself in?

Instead of spending $60 on those, go get some of the cheap PVC rain paints/jacket for ~$20. They have no porosity and you can get some that are massively oversized for you and they work great. Be sure you put something on the ankle to keep it tight to your sock/skin. And obviously vents for inflation.

To save $600 and not have to purchase from over-seas

Yea, I've heard of the ol' smoke pants but I was looking for something that I wouldn't have to modify so much. These pants have absolutely everything needed except for a few under-the-crotch holes for better inflation.

If I don't get these, then I have a ton of Ripstop nylon that I can use to make my own from scratch. Just need to find a good pattern.

What's wrong with ordering over-seas? Also, how is making your own from scratch out of ripstop nylon faster or less modification than putting holes in rain pants?

Tarpaulin eyelets! Get a packet from your hardware store and punch 4-5 up each side of your legs right near your mangina for vents. There easy to fit and cheap!
Extra inflation add more.

Got an old busted backpack you dont want, cut the arm strap adjusters off and stitch them to the bottom of each leg.
Pretty much got your self a PF set up right there Wink

It wasn't that long ago when many jumpers were making their own.

For real?! I never saw any of them in any of those YouTube videos.

Re: [BigfcknG] DYI Tracking Pants
definitely test them out of an airplane. I made some out of rain pants that I thought would work great but the seams down the leg ripped which I had to compensate to fly straight. Fun as a challenge/not real threatening crisis in a skydive environment - terrifying Im sure in a base environment! So the seams should probably be reinforced at least (maybe with a strip of heavy duty material overlapping the seam?).

I also think that making an inlet like PF designs their inlets (like a scoop study one of their wingsuits) would help with even/rapid inflation. The faster the pants pressurize the quicker you will be flying. One of the worst things that can happen to something that inflates is uneven inflation...that can mean directional control.

I think this is why you pay riggers/manufacturers so much for this type of gear - there is a lot of details you don't notice when you first think of making smoke pants Laugh

Re: [samadhi] DYI Tracking Pants
Yup, that's why I didn't wanna go TOO cheap! lol
I've thought into it alot and that's why I didn't just wanna go with that super cheap rain gear.
The pair I linked seem to be pretty well made and I found a clearance selling the size I'd need for $20 bucks! So honestly I think I wanna give them a go. I just need to find a matching jacket :P

Dude, fuck Columbia. If you want to track really well you need more power in the crotch area. See attached picture (headset is optional)

Why not get something NON-INSULATED? You'll burn up in the summer.

Re: [Shredex] DYI Tracking Pants
Unfortunately the basic aerodynamics of tracking making this investment worthless. The main thing is not to get something on you inflated, but have this something in proper AD-shape. As a person who did the first subterminal tracks in polycotton military pants with open crotch and later tried all kinds of stuff, trust me there's nothing to compare with proper T-gear. Personally flying an old PF that i had to modify myself, I'm waiting for Power TS, and I'm sure it's worth every single cent spent, though mems it might give ya are priceless)))

Re: [kar_puzz] DYI Tracking Pants
Ya, I've pretty much given up on the idea when I found out that I really don't want to sew anything. Just gonna suck it up and get a used Pheonix-fly TS. But I'd still like to try my own sometime just for kicks!

With pants like that and some mad tracking skillz, that headset will be mandatory, to communicate with ATC and to do real time youtube updates by voice command.
