ITW - message to all visitors
Hi, the local fire brigade & mountain rescue approached me today and asked me to spread the following information to jumpers:
- in case of an emergency call 118
- always have a radio or cell phone with you
- if you witness an accident please call 118 immediately
- even if the seriousness of the incident is in doubt STILL call immediately
- if you are on the exit and the helicopter is present DO NOT JUMP and STAY AWAY FROM THE EDGE - a falling rock could take out the helicopter + crew.
The season is in full swing and we have had several incidents so far, in one case the jumpers didn't know the 118 number, in two cases the 118 call wasn't made until 2 hours after the incident so it was dark = no heli.
One jumper had an off landing, un-injured, but his girlfriend had no way of contacting him so called the helicopter. She did the right thing in the situation but a cell phone would have saved the call out.
If you are low experience (or jumping without pants /wingsuit) it is better to avoid evening jumps with strong wind conditions, the morning winds are more predictable.
The number of tree landings also increases year on year. Bad canopy skills, jumping in strong winds and low deployment are main causes. Some jumpers seem to think that tree landings are cool / funny!?!
The south wind picks up to un-jumpable levels most days at around 11h - 12h so jumping in the afternoon is not recommended, better the morning and early evening. Check the lake, phone the landing area if possible or send a wingsuiter ;)
Mod please add this to the site info, hmm maybe that should be tidied up too, 2 pages of additions now.
