Jumping with a AC joint separation
Hi Everyone,
Just wanting to know if there are many people out there jumping who have an AC joint separation and if it affects their arm movement and especially reaching for the riser/toggels.
My injury happened 2 weeks ago and has left me with my collar bone sticking over a inch out of my shoulder. I'm starting to get movement back but not above about chest height and it cluncks around alot. The physio says it should be fine in 6-8 weeks, but I don't think he understands the importance in having to reach for the risers.
Is there anyone who has had a similar injury and has it affected their ability to grab risers/toggels in the long term?
Cheers for your answers.

i had a very similar injury ~ 25 years ago after mtb bike crash.
6 weeks of pain
8 weeks of not jumping
No long term effects, unless i get arthritis in a few years.

No shit. I said I just got the injury and I can't move it right now. Wanted to know what the final outcome might be.

Forgot to mention in my original post I only wanted answers from people who actually had the injury and knew what they are talking about. But your answer is a great help thanks, because you are obviously a genius.

You'll be fine dude. I have a grade 3 a/c sep right shoulder from 8 yrs ago. Sticks out like 4 inches when I roll my shoulder forward.

Never notice it R.O.M. or strength-wise. Including WS/Tandem...yadda yadda.

Just looks weird. And pops every once in a while. And I'm old. and a dick. Like Space.

My right shoulder has an AC joint separation. Sticks right out. Sometimes it gets a bit achy and clicky, but it's always fine both pitching and reaching for toggles. Injury is a few years old. Its my left that dislocates when I sneeze that gives me grief in the air!

Dude...had the same thing - left shoulder dislocated in the box position skyjumping terminal. Turned out to be a completely detatched labrum. Have that looked at.

And the surgery/recovery was the single most painful experience of my life. So have fun with that.

I'm good to go now.

I was surfing the Wedge in Newport Beach & sustained this same injury. I would advise against jumping for at least a couple weeks. This depends of course on how badly you injured your shoulder. Mine did not require any surgery. I think you should go to physical therapy for a while & see how things progress. Do not be in a hurry to get better or jump back in the saddle before you are ready. Hope you get better.

Re: [mofonz] Jumping with a AC joint separation
If it bothers you, get it fixed. If not, leave it alone. i had a level 4 seperation on my right shoulder, and a torn labrum on the front and bottom of my left shoulder. Ended up getting them both fixed. They cut some of my right collar bone off to get my shoulder in the right spot, and the labrum fix in not near as bad as the seperation fix. Either way, my doctor who works on many many famous athletes told me "if it bothers you, fix it, if not, leave it alone." Figure he knows best, My left shoulder coming out of socket weekly needed to be corrected and the right one was starting to bother me while I slept. My seperation was bad and it never affected me reaching my toggles. Did have my left shoulder come out once on opening, but again that's a completely different problem. I say keep jumping and see, make sure to do streches to get all your movement back, you'll be fine ;-)

I had a AC joint seperation this spring. Went to an ortho surgeon. he was very matter of fact about my recovery. said i will slowly get better and can jump as soon as i feel safe. i was back in a few weeks. still had some pain and discomfort but full mobility so felt safe. he also said i would have no lasting problems and i have not.
