Norway Fatality - 27/6/12
In reply to:
Earlier today near Eidfjord in Norway, Jonathan Tagle was involved in a fatal accident during a mountain run. We don't have all the details yet, other than it appears he clipped a tree with his canopy and fell into the river below. It is confirmed that he passed away. We are in touch with his family and are making arrangements to bring him home - Bobo and JC are out there.

This is too fresh and painful to reflect on all the amazing things Jonathan accomplished as a person, a son, and an athlete. We’d like to ask you to pray for his family right now whilst we try to come to terms with this devastating news.

JT - may perpetual light shine upon you, may you rest in peace bro

But who knows these days...

Yes Jonathan Tagle is a member of the Performance Designs Factory team, and yes this was not a BASE jumping fatality but a skydiving canopy incident on a mountain swoop. BSBD was lucky enough to meet him in the Czech Republic, legend

PD press release PD blogamajig
"It’s with great sadness that we give you the facts surrounding the accident yesterday – please know that this is full disclosure and may be uncomfortable to read.

Jonathan had been jumping all morning with members of the Fazza Sky team on this one particular run in the Eidfjord region in Norway. In the afternoon he was alternating runs with JC and Bobo then with the Fazza Sky Team - this was Jonathan’s seventh run of the day on the same run.

He was flying aggressively and confidently in terrain where there is no margin for error. His canopy hit a tree in a very narrow deep part of the gorge, causing him to strike the side of the gorge wall and fall into the river below. The river swept him downstream and over several waterfalls until he got stuck at the bottom of one of them.

JC and Bobo were ground support for the run. On seeing the accident JC rode the helicopter up to where Jonathan was. JC tried to retrieve Jonathan from the water – he was heavily entangled in lines and material and face down. JC managed to cut away his canopy but could see that Jonathan was already gone. The canopy was still wrapped around Jonathan and it started to reinflate, pulling both of them down the river towards the next waterfall. JC had to let him go and Jonathan came to rest in the next pool, where the Medivac team eventually retrieved him.

Once the Coroner here is ready to release him, Jonathan will be flown back to his family in California.

We want to thank you for all your expressions of love and support for Jonathan’s family and the team over the last 24 hours. We are spread far and wide right now and reading all the messages from our skydiving family helps more than you can imagine.

There will be a place to share good stories and fond memories of JT with each other on this page shortly.

Dwain Weston's last jump was discussed on this forum too and it also started from an aircraft.

But while Jonathan started this jump from a helicopter, you can see from Ian Drennan's account above that he was proxy flying some gnarly lines -- at speeds and glide angles not much different than wingsuit proxy flyers, through the same kind of terrain.

Thus it may not qualify as a BASE fatality, but it's certainly a proxy fatality and thus relevant for this forum.

For example, this was Jonathan's seventh proxy flight of the day, so it is legitimate to wonder if fatigue played a role.

I knew Jonathan and, like the rest of the PD teamers, he was there because he's really, really good -- stellar. Total natural. Total pro. Craftsman. Technician. Artist.

So how does he hit a tree and kill himself? To me, seven proxy flights in one day is high on the list of primary factors.

Skydiving takes energy. BASE jumping takes more energy. Proxy flying takes even more because the intensity is sustained.

Whether seven flights in one day is pushing it too much, I wouldn't presume to say, but one thing we might learn from this one is:

No matter how good you are, fatigue degrades your proxy-criticial mind and motor skills before you know you're tired, so it might be good to "fly on instruments" and just automatically add margin to your later jumps whether you feel tired or not.

I learned this lesson many winters ago as a downhill skier. There was always more carnage during the last hour of skiing than during the rest of the day, largely because people wanted to get in "one more run" -- and their minds and bodies weren't up to it and they crashed.

This applies to wing and wingsuit proxy flying too: It's never dumb to pass up the last run, or at least make it more leisurely.

P.S. FYI, Most and maybe all of the PD teamers are moderately experienced or better BASE jumpers, many of whom I've known for years. My heart goes out to them because these guys have been together for a decade or more and their love for each other is amply demonstrated in the actions of JC Colclasure.

wow....what a skill (especially flying those canopies inches from the rocks)...

I guess that's what got him... Unsure
