To anyone who has ordered *NEW* gear - Morpheus
Has anyone ordered a new container and canopy to have them arrive assembled and packed?

I recently got a new trango/razor from Morpheus and it arrived all packed up and ready to jump as if it were used gear.

When I ordered my custom blackjack from Asylum years ago it arrived in sealed packaging straight off the line and I had the pleasure of being to first to run the lines and introduce the first packing creases where and how I wanted. The container was packaged in seperate plastic and obviously not assembled.

Is this standard practice of Morpheus or what's the deal?

I have emailed Morpheus regarding this but have had issues communicating with her so don't expect a reply for at least a few days.

Back in the day, Consolidated Rigging used to send out their new rigs field packed and daisy chained. As I understand it, they quit doing that after one of their customers reported a "funny" opening on their new rig. Whoops!!

Smak, I'm a long time customer of Morpheus and friends with Kathy so when I saw your post I texted her. She was unable to log in to reply to your question herself because she is in the middle of a family emergency but wanted you know that Morpheus has assembled all of their rigs as a courtesy since 1999 when the company began. This allows for a final inspection of the fit, options, colors, etc. I myself have two Morpheus/Troll rigs and they have both come this way and until your post I would have thought that the assembly of a complete rig would be the industry standard. Enjoy your new rig, I love my Gargoyle & Helium with matching Troll DWs and I'm sure you'll feel the same about your Razor/Trango!

Standard practice. Basic Research used to deliver rigs packed, as well. Today I think Morpheus is the only manufacturer doing it.

I always recommend that the purchaser take the pack job apart by hand (rather than jumping it) to see what the "factory" pack job looks like.

one of the first things my mentor talked to me about, was regardless of the manufacturer, with a brand "new" sky or BASE canopy, the FIRST thing to do is hang that bitch up and give it a FULL inspection down to every last stitch, bartack, line attachment, crossport, line, etc...........thats been my practice so far but maybe im paranoid

whatever floats your boat though!

that sounds pretty badass. I wouldnt complain about that for a second. And who better than the manufacturer to

?
They built and designed the system, I think they know what they're doing.

I have had the pleasure of having Morpheus make me a new rig last year and dealing with Kathy. I ordered my BJ from Consolidated so the only thing that was assembled were the risers to the container.

I would think that Morpheus does this, as previously mentioned to inspect the rig once more as it's assembled and packed, but I'm guessing some jumpers might prefer this if they struggle with rigging work, and would prefer that the risers are connected to the canopy, and the risers are connected to the container. Have you ever seen a skydiving canopy hooked up backwards and jumped?

After reading about the jumper who jumped a daisy chained rig out of the box, I can see why this might not be the best way to send a new rig to a customer, as well as one that needs assembly, and packing it might be a better option, especially in this sue happy country we live in.

I strongly doubt that anyone jumped your gear if that's what you are referring to, or maybe I'm reading that wrong. Personally, I would feel better knowing that my new rig went through one more QC check as it's assembled and packed.

Last year I ordered from Morpheus and it has been delivered assembled.
Because I was a beginner I started to train my packaging, and I had the bad surprise that it was not mounted correctly (back to front on one side).
Everybody can make mistakes, so I don't blame them. I am responsible for my packaging.
And founding the mistake make me think that my checking was good Tongue.

I would!

A very reputable rigging loft manager told me about a reserve they got missing a bartack (on more than one reserve on a large government contracct). The manufacture even has a counter on the bartack machine where the assembly line has to log "starting" and "ending" count for every canopy, and one was still missing... They only can assume the user had to put new thread in the machine and did not log the test bartack they did...

A rigger told me about a skydiving rig that, after its first jump, the customer complained it was falling apart... The harness, in a few key places, was just held together with hot glue.... The brand was one of the most respected by skydivers.

A brand new rig needs the best inspection ever... A used rig has been "inspected" by people who have used it on multiple jumps.Crazy

Yes, my brand new rig came assembled and packed to jump. Being that I had zero BASE jumps when it arrived and was scared silly I went over every stitch with one of my mentors who was also an experienced rigger.
I have never had anything but great service and products from Morpheus!

yes, i recieved my razor/trango packed as well.
i opened it enough to see that i was happy with the packjob, reclosed it, and jumped it from 1800'A
the opening was kinda hard and 90 degrees left. but the toggle setting was good, dont have to change it!
i packed it and jumped it again, it opened much nicer.

+1
The last new rig I inspected had 3 missing bartacks. Also one of the PCs was 3cm out of trim.

Other things I've found on gear: are missing bartacks, wrong line lengths, failing MLW lower junctions and 2 rigs with battery acid damage to the harness/container/canopy. Improper brake stowages.
also found a 3.5cm difference in left vs right lines induced by an asymmetrical opening.
On gear checks, twisted MLWs, misrouted 3rings, improperly fastened chest straps.

Everything is considered suspect in my inspections regardless of the manufacturer.
take care,

Thanks for the replies..

I don't believe there is much concern the rig was used before shipment, its more a matter of how the item presents itself upon arrival.

I think back to getting my new canopies and mirage container really appreciating the work involved seeing it from the inside-out pre assembly. I opened my razor/trango and it looked like any number of rigs I have come across in my days.

If I had it to do over I'd request not to assemble I guess, but when I get a chance I'll unpack and inspect in detail.

Appreciate the feedback.
